It was only later that it took on a more pernicious denotation, though it always kept the connotation of comfortable chatter. Salon Atelier's rose-colored door opens each day because of the efforts of owners Julia Hartman and Cynthia Newsome. Julia's career started 20 years ago when she studied cosmetology at Schilling Douglas School of Hair Design. After her prowess as a stylist, nail technician, and aesthetician landed her work at a salon, she became a brand specialist for Aveda Hair Care and MAC Cosmetics. That's when she started to miss working in a salon—a longing that inspired her to start Salon Atelir with Cynthia Newsome.
Meanwhile, Cynthia's 30 years of experience started at the Annapolis Beauty Academy. She worked in salons and spas, and even opened two of her own. In addition to traveling as an educator and platform artist, she won several awards as a colorist. Together, Julia and Cynthia lead a team of hairstylists, nail artists, and aestheticians. They also use products by Davines—an Italian company dedicated to sustainability and the Renaissance tradition that inspired Michelangelo to paint shampoo bottles on the Sistine Chapel.
Vincent Wright snipped his first bang in his uncle’s barbershop in 1963, and that bit of creativity went on to became his lifelong passion. He later went on to study at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London, perfecting his styling techniques so much that he was invited to join the faculty. Eventually, he returned to Maryland, where he opened Ascension Salon and Spa in 1988.
And his shears haven’t slowed down since. He and his team of stylists trim, style, and color hair, while their aesthetician allies cleanse skin with facials or paint nails in lacquer, Shellac, or tiny oil portraits of Renaissance beauties. On the spa side, massages knead away tension in 30- to 90-minute sessions and aromatherapy treatments extend calm feelings into the air you breathe.
Amid blush-pink walls, Whit's End Salon & Spa gives its team of stylists 3,000 square feet of elbow room—and they use it to keep their guests feeling beautiful with a head-to-toe menu of services. Hair experts armed with Redken products brighten locks with color treatments, and weave hair into elegant updos or alluring fruit baskets. Nail technicians adorn fingers and toes with coats of chip-resistant shellac polish, while aestheticians erase signs of aging or acne with Dermalogica salves. Waxing, spray or UV tanning, and make-up applications add the final flourish to a new look.
Using the Italian crème hair color line It’s Color, the stylists of Intrique transform appearances by changing hues, retouching roots, or adding dimension with full or partial highlights. They also tame frizz for up to eight weeks with Keratin Express treatments, and create sleek looks with Kenra Professional Products. In addition to snipping dead ends, the multi-talented staff removes unwanted hair above the eyes, lips, or mustache tattoo with warm wax.
