Even before Chris Stout founded Vineyard Kennels, she had already dedicated most of her adult life to helping. She started out her career lobbying Congress on behalf of food bank gleaning programs, earning the Presidential Volunteer Action Award award from Ronald Reagan. Then, about 15 years ago, she decided to help out a little closer to home. When her daughter wanted to start a grooming business, Chris worked toward her American Boarding Kennel Association certification, and opened up Vineyard Kennels. Today, she continues to run the kennel—and even lives onsite—with her dog Bitsy.
Her trained staff pools 40 years of experience as they watch after canine guests in the 10,000 square feet facility. The temperature-controlled building features sturdy cinderblock walls that shelter toddler and Kuranda beds. Outside, a fenced-in play area gives tail-waggers a place to frolic in the sun. After an invigorating romp, pups lap up well water that has been softened, disinfected, and purified with reverse osmosis. This water, along with a shampoo and blow-dry, also leaves dogs lustrous during bathtime. For owners who need to get to work early, the self-service corral allows for early drop-off and late pick-up.
Since brothers Aaron and Evan Steed founded Meathead Movers as high schoolers in 1997, they’ve earned accolades for their prompt service and professional demeanor while handling local and long-distance moves. Every able-bodied employee must pass written and oral testing and attend the Meathead University continuous-training program, which has resulted in a breakage-to-move ratio that is eight times lower than the national average.
The success of Meathead Movers has allowed it to expand into other services including storage and packing. Princess Packers provides premove packing services, allowing clients to focus on more important roles, such as running errands or preparing emotionally unstable pets for a new home. It also donates $1 for every box packed to the Cinderella Fund.
At Taste of the Central Coast, visitors take a culinary tour of nearly 30 area restaurants and wineries while grooving to live music and participating in auctions to benefit an important local organization. Guests can present chompers with unfamiliar sensations from eateries such as Full of Life Flatbread and New West Catering while sipping spirited libations from wineries located in the Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara, and Santa Maria. Like pranksters who replace a bowl game's football supply with honey-filled beehives, local pastry chefs make the event sweeter, contributing decadent cupcakes to the gustatory parade. Live and silent auctions give guests a shot at such coveted items as cases of wine, weekend getaways, and spelunking lessons on the moon. The Family Care Network will use proceeds from the event to fund its efforts to provide foster-care services and assistance to high-needs children and families.
As its name implies, Art Bar is a venue for socializing as well as creating. Inside the art studio located in the Granada Hotel, several experienced and fun-loving local artists lead step-by-step workshops designed to help students create their own unique paintings based on a chosen subject. Using acrylic paints, watercolor, or mixed media, groups may create cresting waves, an ocean at sunset, human figures, or still-life arrangements. All the necessary art supplies such as brushes and aprons are included for every workshop. To keep students fueled for their painting, the bar serves beer, wine, cocktails, and charcuterie platters.
The championship course at Avila Beach Golf Resort hugs a tidal estuary that empties into the scenic San Luis Harbor, offering players dramatic views of the Pacific as they work their way through 18 holes. Designers Olin Dutra and Desmond Muirhead keep players on their toes with two distinct nine-hole sides, with the front nine draping over hilly terrain and the back nine traversing the coast and all of its singing fish. Throughout rounds, players corral their golf balls over kikuyu-grass fairways in pursuit of bentgrass greens, each mown short to produce quick-moving putts.
