The encouraging coaches at SwimAmerica teach swimming skills that build confidence and coordination in kids. The CPR- and first-aid-certified aquatic instructors acquaint wee ones with splashing during parent-child classes, begin building technique in elementary-school-age classes, and welcome older pupils to join them for adult classes, including water aerobics, an arthritis aquatics program, and underwater poker.
If you ask the team at Tri-California Events what a triathlon is all about, you might hear about swimming, biking and running, but what you?ll hear the most about is how fun they are. As each racing season emerges, the team gets to work running fun races from the mud-filled MORE Obstacle Course in the spring to Scott Tinley?s Triathlon in fall, replete with on-road and off-road options. One of their most popular events is the Wildflower Triathlon, now one of the largest triathlons in the world. During this packed event many athletes camp out for the weekend to ensure a memorable experience and to make s'mores as race fuel.
Officially opened in July 1962, Village Country Club incorporates the natural beauty of Northern Santa Barbara County’s wine country as its backdrop. Towering oaks and pine trees play a starring role throughout the course, especially on the 10th hole. There, a stately oak stands right in the middle of the fairway, marking the course's signature challenge and the location of its treasure chest of golden golf balls. At the 16th hole, meanwhile, an elevated tee tempts players to let it fly, all while avoiding a lake and brook running the length of the hole’s left side.
Next to the course, club visitors can practice on the driving range or at a practice green outfitted with a sand bunker. Or, they can step away from golf altogether by taking a dip in the pool and hitting the tennis courts—each of which remains open year-round.
Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Total length of 6,546 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 71.5 from the back tees * Course slope of 128 from the back tees * Four sets of tees per hole
Central Valley Scuba Center educates adventurers in the science of scuba at an on-site classroom facility before heading off on trips to the tropical waters of the Atlantic. The Center's 12-foot-deep outdoor diving pool allows certified instructors to give hands-on direction to beginning students and divers seeking certification. Those who enjoy scuba and receive certification can join instructors on adventures to Cozumel and the Caribbean islands. There, they'll dive amid tropical fish and spy on movies filmed in Atlantis.
Members of Evolutions Fitness & Wellness receive access to more than 100 weekly fitness classes, rows of cardio and strength-training equipment, a lap pool, plush locker rooms, childcare services, and a slew of other gym perks. That's not what separates Evolution from other facilities, though. Its distinction as the fitness center for Tulare Regional Medical Center does. And the facility's medically minded take on fitness is evident, from the therapy pool and wellness seminars to fitness assessments and doctor vs. doctor bench-press contests.
Though guests to Island Waterpark might meet humans on their way to the water, they might also encounter Pelican Pete?a giant blue pelican in a floral-print shirt and bermuda shorts. He and an athletic lifeguard staff oversee guests as they wander among fountains and roaring water in attractions designed for everyone from toddlers to adults. Bright-blue tube slides spiral down into splash pools, a giant bucket tips gallons of water onto passersby, and a three-story open slide sends riders on a straight shot into a landing zone that pads their descent with a foot of water and a coral reef packaged in bubble wrap. Aquatic revelers can also float down an endless lazy river and children can frolic under arching fountains and waterfalls in the kids key largo lagoon.
