During each session, novice and experienced clients test their fitness limits inside the modern interior of a Reebok-branded gym. When Regina Janesko had to take a physical fitness test in order to keep a new job, the avid gym rat and weightlifter wasn't worried about passing. Yet somehow she failed the first two times she took it, leaving her with only one opportunity left. When her test administrators suggested she try CrossFit, Regina went to Bergen County CrossFit, where co-owner Daniel Ramsay created fitness routines tailored to the requirements of her exam. Needless to say, she nailed it on the third try. Today, she's still an active member at Bergen County Crossfit.

It's a common occurrence here: people wander in, some with a specific goal others without, and eventually become part of a community that seeks to support and encourage each other. The daily classes can be modified based on age and fitness level, and incorporate techniques such as kettle bells and core strengthening. Co-owner Lily is also known to dish out nutritional advice, helping members supplement their workouts with healthful meal suggestions and tips on where to find low-cal snacks.

CrossFit Meadowlands? head coach, Anthony Rumo, owns black belts in both karate and judo, but, though he has trained in martial arts since age 9, he?s never found any training regimen as demanding and effective as CrossFit. After discovering the system?s benefits while training at an MMA gym in California, he traveled the country learning as much as he could, eventually earning more than five certifications that include CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Strongman, and CPR. Together with coach Frankie Corvelli, named New Jersey's strongest man under 175 pounds, he now leads groups of fitness disciples as they embark upon journeys into the community of CrossFit.

The pair?s 7,000-square-foot facility harbors equipment including 40 yards of AstroTurf, 20-foot ceilings with five climbing ropes, 3,000 pounds of bumper plates, gymnastics rings, and strongman equipment such as sleds, Atlas stones, and tires up to 500 pounds. Students interact with this equipment as they charge through WOD?workouts of the day?which vary constantly but can include weight lifting, cardio training, and body-weight exercises such as pushups, air squats, and dips on suspended rings. Unlike the sack race portion of a job interview, Anthony and Frankie scale their classes for athletes of all ages and fitness levels, resulting in workouts that are universally challenging.
