Trapeze School New York’s expansion west meant Angelenos no longer had to cross the country to join the circus. At two locations—an indoor studio for silks classes in Santa Monica and an outdoor studio on the Santa Monica Pier—highly trained instructors teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced maneuvers during classes on the flying trapeze, aerial silks, lyra, trampoline, and Spanish web. All of Trapeze School New York’s countrywide facilities in New York, Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, and LA hold themselves to high safety standards that account for everything from equipment to instructors and life preservers. In an effort to bring their flying-trapeze instruction to surrounding communities regardless of funding, the school also gives lessons through their nonprofit branch of operations.
Eurostoves offers more than 500 cooking classes annually, which change with the seasons. There are classes for people of all heights, from aspiring sushi chefs to aspiring Paula Deens. There are even classes geared toward expanding kitchen-specific knowhow, such as the basic knife skills class and a practicum covering the amount of fire you should touch. Each one imparts a different cuisine type or skill set, so browse the class calendar to find the class that best cracks your eggs and whips your bacon.
Butter, sugar, and flour. These three simple ingredients form the basis of each treat cooked up at Amanda Oakleaf Cakes. While the ingredients are straightforward, the cakes are anything but, as proven by head baker Amanda Oakleaf and the 4-foot-tall Dora the Explorer cake she constructed on the Food Network’s Cake Challenge. At her shop, Amanda and her team of artists, sculptors, and bakers create treats that run the gamut in flavor and function, from elegant tiers of red velvet to sugary cartoon figurines placed atop marshmallow fondant. Guests can dream up flavor combinations such as gingerbread cake slathered in white-chocolate buttercream or chocolate samoa layered in honey icing, or offer up a 3-D object for Amanda and her team to re-create in meticulous, edible detail. Regularly scheduled cake-decorating classes impart visitors with some of the team’s creative tricks of the trade, such as leveling cakes and keeping schoolchildren from swarming in through the doggy door at the sight of snickerdoodle cupcakes.
Though the image of an arrow pulled taut may be evocative of a hunter stalking prey, archery is a sport open to anyone, including nonhunters, children, and nursing-home residents. At Art of Archery, NFAA–certified instructor Dana White teaches students how to safely maneuver their equipment while honing their aim and concentration skills. Students also learn about the characteristics of arrow flight, allowing them to predict an arrow's path with greater accuracy. At archery parties, guests take aim at festive balloons attached to targets or birthday cakes catapulted into the air for a chance to win prizes. Art of Archery's staff also fine-tunes equipment by custom-fitting bows and arrows to their clients' size and strength.
If you've never played an instrument, you're missing out on one of the most fulfilling human experiences: smashing your instrument. Actually, the most fulfilling experience is when you play something so beautiful that you lose yourself in the music. For you seasoned musicians, a brush up lesson at Page Music could improve your skills. Why, even Mozart took piano lessons late in his life to learn new techniques. Today's Groupon also makes a great gift for a talentless friend or relative. All ages are welcome at Page.
