With backgrounds in law enforcement, state-certified instructors Nick Villalona and David Green II hope that no conflict ever escalates to violence. But should people choose to prepare themselves by carrying a firearm, Nick and David want them to do so in a safe, responsible manner. That's why they specialize in qualifying clients for a state concealed-handgun license, also known as a CHL. Leading both classroom and range training, the duo verses students in the basics of safely handling and storing a firearm, as well as what rights and responsibilities come with holding a CHL. Their meticulous and patient approach has earned praise from the likes of Matt Patrick, radio personality on KPRC AM 950 and KTRH AM 740.
The jungle would be a safer place if the chin-high grass, towering trees, and wild animals were painted on the walls and everything three-dimensional was inflatable. This dream of a danger-free nature preserve comes to life at Jump N Jungle. Voted the Best Kids’ Party Place in the Bay Area Citizen Reader's Choice Awards, the jungle lets kids leap toward the rafters on inflatable jumpers, test the bounds of gravity on giant slides, and navigate an unending labyrinth of mazes and obstacle courses. Both locations play host to weekend birthday gatherings by supplying invitations, plates and plastic cutlery, as well as staff supervision in the party room and play areas. Additionally, its childcare services include an educational curriculum for toddlers and preschoolers, as well as before school and afterschool activities for older children.
Pearland Swim Academy instills watery know-how in young aquanauts, teaching basic and advanced techniques in a comfortable, kid-friendly atmosphere. The four group lessons meet once a week in classes assembled by skill level, allowing youngsters to hone their mastery of the water away from the presence of underachieving schools of fish, many of which have among the lowest SAT scores in the nation.
Throughout the year, more than 100 ladies compete in the South Side Roller Derby league, racing each other and racking up points during exhilarating bouts on treacherous banked tracks. Owned and operated entirely by volunteers, the league is run by people who enjoy the sport and care about sharing it with their community. In addition to a regular schedule of matchups, the ladies host roller-derby bootcamp classes replete with speed skating drills, derby-specific exercises, conditioning regimens, and hand-holding techniques in case the DJ announces a couples’ skate.

What inspired you to start or run this business?
CrossFit Propel came into existence through an organic relationship that grew between both owners, Minh and [me]. We met through CrossFit, and fell in love with the community and how it helped change people's lives. Through time, we saw the need for a well operated and managed gym that was dedicated to improving not only people's lives, but how the message of CrossFit was being delivered. Our focus is on instilling courage into our clients so that they will be inspired to be better than they were the day before. CrossFit Propel is, and always will be, in the business of encouraging people.
What is your most popular offering?
Our world-class Beginning Series helps break the misconception that CrossFit is strictly for hardcore exercise enthusiasts or athletes. The CrossFit Beginning Series introduces individuals to the foundational movements and exercises typically seen in CrossFit workouts. We ensure clients have everything they need to meet their fitness goals in a safe, effiicent, and effective manner. Whether those clients are looking to get back into shape or they have an extensive athletic background, we strive to include everyone.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
For us, its helping people! That's all we're about! We want to encourage, motivate, inspire, and transform people into the best version of themselves possible. CrossFit does more than change a person's physical appearance; it changes and improves an individual in every aspect of their life. Tasha Beale and Nick Cedillo drew upon a lifetime of gymnastics experience to found Pearland Elite Training Center. They each boast some impressive credits on their resumes, from collegiate All-American athlete to championship competitor at the national level. Today, they pass on the skills that helped their careers flourish to the the next generation of competitive gymnasts, tumblers, and cheerleaders.
They design their classes for kids ages two and up, personalizing instruction for each child. Alongside a staff of fellow coaches, they ensure that every student gets a good workout and feels like a part of the team, regardless of skill level. They also try to make sure their charges have fun, whether in regular class or a special session. Summer camps, in particular, add a bit of extra entertainment to the regular regimen, with the introduction of games, contests, and crafts such as making a functioning springboard out of nothing but Popsicle sticks.
