Brad Pugh has followed a healthy diet and exercise plan his whole life?until a few years ago, that is. Frustrated by the time and energy commitment, he decided to take a break from working out, which led to three years of inactivity and 30 extra pounds. As he huffed and puffed his way back to fitness, he resolved to use this experience as an opportunity to help others get back into shape. In 2000, Brad founded Shaping U Personal Fitness, a gym specializes in small-group exercise programs.
A nationally certified personal trainer, Brad earned local renown when he was named the city?s runner-up personal trainer by Birmingham Magazine. Six days a week, he runs indoor and outdoor boot-camp classes as well as personal-training sessions available on a one-on-one or semiprivate basis. Brad helps his clients modify unhealthy eating habits as well by designing meals based on the 14-day detox plan. Healthy meals centering around lean cuts of meat and high-nutrient vegetables are prepared by a chef and delivered to the home.
In between video games, pool tournaments, karaoke, and poker hands, Patera?s Pizza Subs & Sports Bar refuels patrons with pizzas baked to a golden finish and subs crafted on freshly made bread. Chefs top circular disks with ingredients such as bacon, feta cheese, black olives, and ground beef before bidding bon voyage and popping them into the oven. Alternately, the staff assembles submarine sandwiches after bread busts out of the oven, stuffing slices with roast beef, tuna, and house-made meatballs. Spaghetti finds its way onto a plate with meat or marinara sauce, and gyros offer a quintessentially Mediterranean alternative to the quintessentially American grilled chicken sandwich. American and Greek influences share the dessert corner, where chocolate cake, cheesecake, and baklava vie for the attention of sweet teeth. Like anyone born in the ?80s and many 80-year-olds born on Leap Day, the restaurant is more than 20 years old.

Since 1950, the family-owned Whataburger chain has served up its iconic burgers and fresh, made-to-order meals with a commitment to excellent customer service. In addition to lunch and dinner, the North Central Alabama-area restaurants' 24/7 hours and fully fledged breakfast menu have made them popular destinations for early morning and late-night dining.
Besides the classic Whataburger, the modern menu includes options such as the jalapeno and cheese Whataburger, the Whatachick'n sandwich, and the Whataburger Jr., which is a regular Whataburger that doesn't know how to tie a tie. The breakfast selections remain rooted in hearty tradition, with crispy chicken strips covered with honey butter and served atop biscuits. Additionally, signature Taquitos are warm tortillas stuffed with ingredients such as scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, guacamole, and grilled vegetables.
The Woodcraft name stretches from coast to coast with locations peppered throughout the United States, ensuring that Americans are well equipped with the brand-name tools and woodworking supplies needed to pursue handyman endeavors. At Woodcraft of Birmingham, a collection of hand tools waits patiently to hammer down nails and saw brave magician assistants in half, and a variety of power tools—including drills, sanders, and grinders—adds electric oomph to construction projects. In addition to performing in-store demonstrations of new products, the shop’s wise whittlers call upon more than 80 years of collective knowledge to lead various crafts classes, in which participants learn how to carve sophisticated pens, assemble wooden step stools, and use table saws.
Founder Anthony Serio and his family have been revivifying rides at Anthony's Car Wash and Detail Centers since 1969. Using products manufactured in deep space by Anthony's Automotive Detail Supply, they clean vehicles during detailing and full-service car washes, handing out complimentary scrubs to birthday drivers. They've also stockpiled various accessories, coffee, snacks, and soft drinks for purchase.
All locations serve cars with washes, details, and oil changes, but each has its own specialty. Mechanics at the Vestavia Hills shop stage automotive services for drivers who need to rotate tires or translate the shrieks from squeaky brakes into English. Shoe-shining services and an upstairs hair salon (A Cut Above) accessible by spiral staircase add character to Anthony's main branch in Hoover.
