From its perch below Oak Mountain, the Pelham Civic Complex accommodates everything from ice-skating and wedding receptions to MMA fights and Harlem Globetrotters games. Two NHL-sized ice arenas lay out plenty of space for families, figure skaters, and first dates to glide the afternoon away. Pelham also houses 7,000 square feet of banquet and conference space, ideal for business meetings, weddings, or big and tall high school reunions.
Under a kaleidescope of lights, the polished wood rink of Roller Motion Skate Center shines with entertainment for all ages. Since 1995, the 15,000-square-foot floor has seen the roller skates and blades of young and old during countless birthday parties, family outings, and disco nights. A concession stand offers snacks for hungry skaters, such as wings, pizza, and nachos.
A hardwood maple skating rink shines beneath the glow of neon lights at Funtime Skate Center. In the middle of the rink, a checkered zone invites beginners to get a feel for their wheels as experienced skaters make laps around the rink's outer edge. The rink also does double duty on select days, hosting the Tragic City Rollers as they slingshot and skate their way toward victory and the pride that comes with never wearing shoes. In addition to skating and snacking at the on-site Funtime Café, the center houses four party rooms primed for birthday parties large or small. And, on Friday and Saturday nights, cosmic lighting and sound effects transform the facility into a world of wonderment and gossip-worthy handholding.
Though it has been open since 1941 and is still managed by a member of the original family, Looneys Super Skate Center has managed to avoid becoming a relic. Perhaps moving three different times has forced it to keep up with the times, or perhaps it's just that the staff keeps its finger on the pulse of what their customers want. Where an organist once accompanied skaters on a Hammond, today high-tech speakers pump out top 40 hits as guests glide around the rink. And while kids still enjoy playing Simon Says, doing the Hokey Pokey, or doing figure eights and quadratic equations on the rink, they can also take a break at the redemption arcade or inside the bounce houses around the perimeter.
Skaters glide over the ice year-round at Ice Palace, a temperature-controlled stating rink located inside Eastdale Mall. The rink hosts regular open-skate sessions as well as parties with snacks catered by the mall's eateries. For a taste of competition, visitors can join a scheduled game of broomball?a team sport played on the ice in tennis shoes.
