The YMCA of Greater Des Moines has been promoting healthy living to families and individuals in the surrounding communities since 1868. One month of family membership (good for two adults and any dependants under the age of 23) entitles tribes to full usage of any of the area locations including the brand new YMCA Healthy Living Center. Membership amenities encompass access to fitness equipment, lap and therapeutic pools, more than 500 fitness classes like kickboxing, yoga, tai chi, and water aerobics, reduced program rates, access to the child care nursery, and many other programs and services, which vary according to location. Each family member will also get three sessions of personalized attention from one of the Y’s Healthy Living Coaches, who can help make the most of your month of muscling by helping the whole family become acclimated to the equipment, establish fitness goals, and transform into an entire tribe of variously sized Rocky Balboas.
We are a non-profit Chamber/Main Street Organization that hosts a world class storytelling festival each September. We also operate and maintain a local carousel, and provide resourses to individuals, businesses and other organizations.
At Camp Hantesa, campers in grades 1?12 enjoy the breathtaking wilderness of Iowa through days full of swimming, crafts, canoeing, and making new friends. Campers learn how to ride a friendly horse during equestrian day camp, or cook snacks over a campfire during hikes and lake trips.
After adopting The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as its national philanthropy project in 1992, Zeta Tau Alpha women's fraternity has worked to raise funds and awareness for the disease at college campuses across the country. The University of Iowa chapter's annual 5K corrals runners, walkers, and pogo stickers in the heart of Iowa City's Lower City Park to kick off the 3.1-mile race, which runs a circular route through campus. After participants cross the finish line, a post-race celebration awards prizes to top finishers and restocks energy reserves for all with food and drinks served by event sponsors. Runners can also opt for a complimentary massage to soothe tired muscles or whimpering tennis shoes, and participants take home an event T-shirt (while supplies last) to commemorate the trek.
