Growing up in Nigeria, Victoria Onwuchekwa became familiar with the treatment of human-health issues at a young age. That's because pharmacology was her family's legacy—her mother was one of the first female pharmacists in the nation. Advised by her mother to “do something to benefit your people,” Onwuchekwa earned degrees in physiology and pharmacology. Then, she earned a master's of science degree in industrial pharmacy and cosmetic science and began designing bath and body products for a company she named Chic Afrique Herbals.
In her West Philadelphia laboratory, Onwuchekwa fuses modern cosmetic technology with traditional African ingredients such as shea butter and sweet-almond oil to produce natural products that moisturize and protect the skin and hair. Among her creations are jojoba-rich Odara moringa conditioning hair food, enriched black soap that deep cleans with a luxurious lather, and Oyin honey butter, a natural emollient. Dermatologist-approved and never tested on animals, the company's products are made in small batches and packaged by hand.
As America’s first zoo and current home to more than 1,300 creatures, the Philadelphia Zoo hosts a cavalcade of winged avians, furry friends, aquatic characters, and slithering showboats on 42 sprawling acres. Gauge the ferocity of your roar at the Big Cat Falls, or visit the snow-strewn habitats of polar bears, snow leopards, penguins, and the Cheetos-dusted Amur tigers. Exercise your bipedality over to the primate reserve and speak firsthand with the trainers and conservationists working to save and protect endangered primates worldwide from the violence of video games and reckless taxis. The Philadelphia Zoo also features rides and attractions (at additional costs), allowing revelers to twirl about the Amazon rainforest carousel, paddle the swan boats, or take a ride in the iconic Zooballoon, where, from the comfort of the skies, the bearded pig's questionable facial hair is only turning children’s tears into raindrops.
In 1933, the founders of Keswick Cycle opened their doors with a common goal in mind: to make each visitor feel like a part of the family. Almost 80 years later, a staff of avid cyclists and triathletes maintains the same friendly vibe at all three locations, meanwhile stocking an assortment of bikes and accessories. Bicycles from Cannondale, Specialized, Electra, and other big brands conquer myriad terrains, from roads and triathlon courses to mountain trails mucky with discarded cooking oil. Tires, apparel, and other accessories round out the inventory, situated around the shop's central hub, the services department. Here, factory-trained mechanics tune up or overhaul any type of bike or shopping carts masquerading as bikes. These same experts fit athletes for competition at the triathlon studio and, in their spare time, lend a hand to local charities.
