Serving upscale soul food in the heart of Roxborough, Soul II Sole finds the sweet spot between comfort food fare and modern flair. The room’s dark wood floor, white tablecloths and burnt sienna walls set the tone for a relaxed yet attentive dinner that might just start with the crab balls with spicy mayo, or one of the three kinds of chicken wings. The entrées here are fresh and imaginative: stuffed turkey chops topped with mushroom gravy, crab and shrimp alfredo and various permutations of tilapia, from a zippy garlic parmesan to a salmon filet that’s stuffed with crabmeat. Further delectables can be paired with a la carte sides like collard greens, mac ’n’ cheese or potato salad. An all-you-can-eat Sunday special brings in plenty of followers.

Housed in a beautiful stone, one-story mill factory building, Bourbon Blue serves its New Orleans-inflected cuisine with style. Inside, a large iron chandelier and old-style pendant lights with smoky yellow glass hang from the tall peaked ceiling. Patrons can grab a seat at the large semi-circular bar or at one of the tables, and opt for a Cajun-style dish such as jambalaya, a quesadilla with alligator sausage or blackened filet mignon tips. There are also plenty of straightforward American dishes, from a burger topped with blue cheese, bacon and mushrooms to pan-seared salmon). In warm weather, one of the best seats in Manayunk is on Bourbon Blue’s deck overlooking the canal and the newly constructed performing arts center.
