The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts offers a wholly inimitable experience featuring acrobatic engagement with the big top’s most artistic and athletically invigorating equipment. In the Groupon-exclusive, 60-minute Intro to Circus Arts class, the school’s seasoned instructors lead students through the ups, downs, and upside-downs of disciplines including juggling, fabric performance, trapeze tight-wire, and plate spinning. Active, free-spirited, and safe, the class pushes participants through light physical challenges, intermediate tests of focus, and never-ending wrestling matches against Father Gravity. Beginning on January 15, sessions run from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays and are open to all levels of talent and curiosity.
Philadelphia Sport and Social Club places athletically minded individuals into leagues, offering six levels of play, from recreational to fiercely competitive. Sports range from men's indoor basketball to outdoor favorites such as coed soccer and coed hockey, played with bladeless skates on the dry, frictional equivalent of ice—a floor. Meeting at several facilities throughout Philadelphia, most sports' seasons consist of 6–10 games and one round of single-elimination playoffs, culminating in prizes for the victors, such as long-sleeve T-shirts and, for kickball champions, a pageant of apologies from former playground bullies.
Retro City Studios' staff of musicians, engineers, songwriters, and producers understands the importance of recording in a professional environment. That's why they've equipped their studio with both modern and vintage musical equipment, and why their clients get to perform in an open recording room with 16' ceilings and hardwood floors. Tuned isolation rooms give singers space to belt their lyrics without distractions. In between recording sessions, musicians recharge their creative batteries and robot bandmates in a control room with wireless internet.
Bikram Yoga Manayunk's classes aren't meant to be easy, but they are meant to accommodate virtually every student. The studio temperature hits 105 degrees, creating a more dynamic workout while simultaneously loosening taut muscles and helping students sink further into each stretch. Within this environment, the instructors encourage attendees to push themselves while still respecting their physical limits. The defined sequence of 26 poses and two breathing exercises never changes, although anyone can ease the difficulty of a particular asana by modifying the hold or tying helium balloons to their ankles.
As students transition from one deeply twisting stretch to the next, tissues are inundated with fresh, oxygenating blood flow, which helps revitalize the muscles and rejuvenate the mind. Instructors are always on hand to lend assistance when needed and to remind everyone to stay hydrated.
The Mann Center is a prepossessing structure from anywhere you sit in the semi-covered amphitheater—all huge, rough slabs of timber that evoke the setting for a barn dance held by elegant giants. Even the lawn section isn’t an ordinary lawn: from the top of the steep hill where the theater perches, audiences can see not only the performers lighting up the stage below but also the canopy of trees in surrounding Fairmount Park and the city skyline just beyond.
Fly solo to witness the aerial circus feats, or buy multiple Groupons and sit with friends, loved ones, or casual acquaintances. If you do want to sit with a group, you must buy all of your Groupons in the same transaction.
