Thinking of the city rarely calls images of fog-ringed mountains and wolf-filled forests to mind, but Discover Outdoors?formerly known as Outdoor Bound?turns these scenes into reality. Owner, avid outdoorsman, and eight-time marathon runner Kirk Reynolds makes sure of it. He and a staff of experts?each a licensed trail guide and Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT?temper the stress of city living with day trips to nearby natural enclaves and weekend camping excursions. The getaways thrill with activities such as hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and horseback riding. International trips, meanwhile, quench a thirst for life-defining adventures beyond trips to the grocery store during peak Saturday hours. Among them: hikes up famed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, treks to Machu Picchu in Peru, and jaunts through the Canadian Rockies. Some of the journeys even grant travelers the opportunity to fundraise for a worthy cause as they explore.

The class rows in unison, guiding a raft across the pond and back. Upon landing, the group splits into teams of two, each hoisting up a log and pressing it overhead. Through such group training, the instructors behind SEAL Team Physical Training, Inc. demonstrate their philosophy that teamwork brings out the best in people. Greeting everyone with a hearty ?Hoo yah!? they lead a fitness program designed by Navy SEAL John McGuire that never repeats the same workout. Training begins with the two-week basic-fitness class, which prepares clients of all fitness levels to enter ongoing membership training. There are also specialized programs for youth, marathon runners, and wile e. coyotes. SEAL Team PT?s results have earned recognition in publications such as Sports Illustrated as well as on Dr. Oz for a client who lost 160 pounds.

The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes & 5K empowers runners and walkers to contribute to the battle against Type 1 diabetes one stride at a time. Racers dash through a marked 5K track, testing their endurance and pursuing a personal best—whether by shaving off a few seconds, finishing a race for the first time, or crossing the line before their shadow does. Attendees can also demonstrate support by enrolling their dogs, who can also take part in the race. Whether running or walking, all participants work toward the same goal: raising funds and awareness for JDRF’s mission to contribute to treatments, and eventually a cure, for Type 1 diabetes.

There's no better way to cool down on a run than throwing some water on your face or, in the case of Drenched 5K, speeding through a misting tunnel, traversing a sprinkler minefield, navigating a foam zone, and zooming down a 100-foot slip 'n' slide. In cities across the country, participants of all fitness levels can hit the pavement during a soaking-wet sprint that culminates in an after-party with drinks, entertainment, and a huge water balloon fight inspired by Songkran, Thailand's soggy New Year's celebration. After the race, participants take home their race T-shirts and sunglasses. A portion of the proceeds goes toward local charities.
