The Valley Preferred Cycling Center's rich history in the world of competitive cycling is evident in the affectionate nickname coined by its visiting racers: T-Town. Every year, the 333-meter track roars under the wheels of amateur and professional cyclists during races, and preps the next generation with courses such as the Air Products developmental cycling program and age-grouped racing leagues.
Kettlebells and TRX suspension-training are just a few of the tools the instructors at Pure Energy Fitness use to strengthen and sculpt physiques. Students can focus on building muscles, burning calories and toning muscles in spin classes, or combining cardiovascular exercise with strengthening resistance routines in boot-camp sessions.
Ray, the co-owner of Ray's Bike Rentals, was a New Jersey State champion bike racer, a race promoter, and ran a bike store for 15 years. Today he's hopped off the seat to give others a chance to ride. He and co-owner Cathy have set up their bike-rental kiosk at the ferry pier in Fort Hancock. They rent beach cruisers, multi-gear bikes, and tandems. For families, they rent kid-size bikes as well as bike carts for children and tag-alongs.
With 15,000 square feet of floor space between its two locations, Human Zoom houses a vast selection of bikes from Trek, Cannondale, and Santa Cruz, as well as snowboards from Gnu, Roxy, and Arbor. They also stock a variety of accessories and parts such as gloves, shoes, pedals, and wheels. In the repair shop, mechanics fix broken bike spokes, adjust derailleurs, and install new handlebars so riders will have a place to put their hands while biking. The staff also performs 90-minute bike-fitting sessions, during which they interview clients and perform adjustments to optimize their ride’s performance.
Exercising can be frustrating if you don't see results. In addition to a slimmer physique, guests at Endure Cycling can see the numerical breakdown of their workout—from the amount of pedal strokes to the number of calories burned to their heart rate throughout their stationary journey. Here, the stationary bicycles use internal sensors to monitor each individual's performance, allowing students to track their progress over time. After saddling up on one of the studio's M3+ indoor cycles, cyclers join a certified instructor on a simulated joyride through a pre-programmed series of climbs, restorative plateaus, and thrilling loop-de-loops while high-energy music helps to keep them motivated. Smart sensors track the RPMs of each bike as well as the rider's heart rate, transmitting data to the room's flat-screen television in real time and storing it for future review. This allows students to keep an eye on their numbers throughout each workout, or go online after class and chart their improvement across multiple sessions to print out and put on their fridge.
