After earning her master's degree at King’s College in London, the research scientist decided to ditch the lab coat and set her sights on cracking the beauty formula. Her first business––Kensington Makeup Artists––became a booming success, delivering on-location wedding makeup and hair for more than 150 brides and at least one confused catering assistant per year. Not only was she named one of Phoenix Business Journal’s Top Forty Under 40 in 2011, but she also found the inspiration to open Park Avenue as a permanent hub for clients who needed everyday services such as updos, highlights, makeup, and waxing. Today, Holli still caters to on-the-go beauty seekers by offering 30-minute mini facials or express blowouts. Those with more leisurely schedules can take their time choosing from six types of eyelash extensions that last anywhere from one night to six weeks.
The term “local” barely begins to describe the on-tap beers at O.H.S.O. Eatery + nanoBrewery. Four suds, including OHSO Orange Pail Ale and OHSO Tart, brew right in-house. And of the beers that don’t originate in the on-site fermentation rooms most still come from nearby––about half of O.H.S.O.’s drafts hail from Arizona-based breweries such as Four Peaks. On weekends, imbibing kicks off early at beer brunch, where entrées such as biscuits with white-sausage beer gravy come with a 10-ounce pour of any Arizonian brew. During dinner––which lasts until midnight every night of the week––, the menu emphasizes quality pub grub, such as small plates, burgers, and flatbread pizzas. Or, drop by for the weekly Sunday afternoon backyard barbecue where guests are allotted second and third helpings of barbecue chicken, brisket, and ribs, and all the wetnaps they can eat.
Looking at her today, you'd never guess that Christina Lucy struggled during gym class in school. She didn't consider herself an athlete, and often watched as coaches cajoled her classmates when they really needed encouragement and support. Christina created Code Pink Boot Camp as a place where women could go to find the encouragement, empathy, and, most importantly, the tools they needed to meet their personal fitness goals. The one-hour boot camps combine strength- and functional-training with cardio drills, obstacle courses, and flexibility exercises like yoga, and each exercise can be completely tailored to each woman's individual goals, whether they want to drop 10 pounds or simply fit back into the slim-cut hot dog suit they wore to prom. And, of course, fun and safety are always given top priority in every boot camp, meaning instructors will never push participants beyond their limitations or turn the workout into a competition.
