Everything from hands-on activities to appearances from storybook characters abounds at The Everything Kids Fest, a two-day celebration of the whimsical minds and innocent hearts of children. Among the many activities, kids and their families can construct new worlds at the Legoland California build arena, explore their fantasies at the Peter Pan pirate playground, and absorb animal-kingdom gossip from sheep, chickens, and goats at the petting zoo. Meanwhile, fairy-tale favorites such as Beauty from Beauty and the Beast, Tinker Bell, Cinderella, and the Fairy Godmother perform perform on the main stage. Local plush athletes including the Coyotes' Howler and the Suns' Gorilla ruffle each other's foam during competitive events.
For 36 years, the Desert Foothills Theater has cast adult and youth actors in beloved classic plays and musicals, obtaining 32 ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence nominations and winning five awards in the 2010–11 season. In a colorful, orchestrated production of Broadway mainstay The Music Man, curtains rise on the arrival of traveling salesman Professor Harold Hill in River City, Iowa. Like most towns, River City is perfect except for its lack of a children's marching band, and Harold smooth-talks townsfolk into buying instruments and uniforms for a band, promising to coach the youths himself though he has no musical knowledge. The lovely but stern local librarian, Marian, throws a wrench in his plans, feels guilty for hurling a blunt object, and falls in love with Harold, complicating his seamless scheme. The Cactus Shadows High School jazz band joins actors in a jubilant soundtrack brimming with classics such as “76 Trombones,” ”'Til There Was You,” and ”Pickalittle.” Outfitted in turn-of-the-century costumes and cast with a delightful mix of adults and authentic children, the play fills the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center's intimate auditorium with vivacious energy.

When it comes to using correct form during a workout, athletes might check themselves in a mirror or get subjective advice from a trainer. Absolute Kinetix Sports Science & Biomechanics Center takes these techniques a step further. Using motion-capture technology similar to that used to develop video games, experts analyze a 3D model of each client to suss out muscle imbalances, potential injury zones, and inefficient form. With this super-specific information, they're able to advise clients on the best ways to achieve their goals, whether that's adjusting the hips before a golf swing, performing special exercises to strengthen weak muscles, or practicing gymnastics until they can recreate scenes from The Matrix. The center showcases this expertise in Fitness From the Ground Up, an easy-to-follow talk show hosted by sports kinesiologist Zig Ziegler. During each show, Ziegler works with guests to demonstrate just how unique the human body is, letting viewers watch both correct and incorrect movements as the show?s guests perform activities, such as running or swinging a golf club, with the motion-capture equipment.
