Housed in a century-old dairy barn amid authentic stable fixtures, vintage theatre seats, and rural checkered textiles, Herongate Barn Theatre shines the footlights on arts culinary and dramatic. Presented the Eat Smart award, Herongate's food architects daily prepare an ever-changing smorgasbord of comfort classics, which have including among their savoury ranks plates of roasted pork loin with applesauce, roast beef, and cranberry chicken. Not to go unaided into the great digestive unknown, entrees are dutifully partnered with down-home sides such as Mom's sweet-potato bake and a full drink menu. Diners can graze as they lap up regular performances on the stage.

Gigantour, the behemoth extravaganza of heavy metal founded by speed rockers Megadeth, returns from a three-year hiatus with an all-new lineup of hard-hitting legends handpicked by Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine. Mustaine leads his own frothing band of shredders through a bludgeoning set of classics and tracks from TH1RT3EN, Megadeth's latest album and the universal password of satanic bakers. Riding shotgun and fully cocked, Lemmy and the bruisers of Motörhead crack skulls and renovate eardrums with blitzkrieg classics about playing cards, fisticuffs, and the merits of chewing ammunition. Other Megadeth-approved acts include Danish metal fiends Volbeat, who cook up molten tunes fit for a sixth grader’s exceptionally brutal science-fair volcano, and Italian goth metallurgists Lacuna Coil.

Second-year music director Danielle Lisboa leads the volunteer-based Orchestra Toronto, which has been wooing ears with tightly spun symphonic works for nearly 60 years. The 80-piece ensemble reassembles in February, providing concertgoers respite from cold-weather blues and panhandling snowmen with "Winter Tales," a collection of fiery, accessible compositions from several legendary composers. Lars-Erik Larsson's The Winter's Tale sets the show in motion before giving way to a quartet of classics, including Chris Meyer's In Memoriam Henryk Gorecki and Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite no. 2. To start the afternoon, attendees can pop into a pre-concert chat, where Clasical 96.3 FM personality Alexa Petrenko will discuss the day's set and explain how violins maintain such curvy physiques. Recognized among Canada's elite venues, George Weston Recital Hall creates an acoustical cocoon with painstakingly insulated walls and retractable curtains and panels that can be rearranged for optimal sound.
