Inspired by their twin boys, the family behind Green Heat Services decided to create a company that would improve the energy efficiency and health of their home. They had been in the indoor-heating-and-cooling business for more than a quarter century, and so applied their knowledge toward rounding up a capable crew and streamlining the experience for their patrons. A licensed HVAC technician oversees each team during installations and commands the use of portable negative pressure vacuums. In addition to helping families breathe easier via cleaner indoor air, the business lowers blood pressure by scheduling their visits in three-hour increments, rather than having clients wait all day for crews to arrive.
The Nail Shop's deluxe version of the pedicure incorporates an exfoliating aloe-vera pumice scrub and a tingly peppermint masque and elegantly extends the hoof-rub to ten mollycoddling minutes, scented with the lotion of your choice. The deluxe manicure also ups the phalange-ante, sloughing off dead skin with a crystalline citrus rub and nourishing it from roof to basement with vitamin E cream. Both deluxe procedures are concluded with a warm towel wrap.
Oakland Flyers organizes aerial endeavors with flight lessons and club plane rentals to keep their customers airborne. Since 1989, its team of instructors has trained amateurs in basic flight techniques with on the ground and in-air lessons that lead to professional pilot qualifications. Pilots and students can take to the skies and practice scribbling their initials in the clouds in Cessna, Piper, and Bellanca airplanes as they gain hours toward private pilot, instrument, commercial, and flight-instructor ratings. An on-site pilot-supplies shop also keeps patrons prepared with books, charts, and limited avionics.
Occupational therapists Dr. Brian R. Foltz and Ross E. Sato founded Pediatric Motor Playground to help children aged 2.5–12 develop physical and academic skills needed to succeed in school. At centers in Lafayette and Danville, the therapists and their team of educational-fitness instructors guide kids through the company's patented Motor Curriculum: 50 straight minutes of activities specifically designed to develop skills such as hand-eye coordination and social interaction. During these sessions, instructors might have kids play basketball, climb on foam-padded gym equipment, exercise with fitness balls, and practice their handwriting.
Dr. Foltz and Mr. Sato aren't comfortable just letting any instructor or animated snowman teach their curriculum. Each educational-fitness instructor completes at least 240 supervised hours of training and must pass both written and physical evaluations.
At first it seemed like the only people who would ever hear about Patrick Caldwell's pies were his friends and family. Using a recipe born in North Carolina and passed down from his mother, he'd craft his specialty white-sweet-potato pie for every family gathering. But it was his mother-in-law who gave him the final push to turn his pie-making hobby into a full-time endeavor. Using the family recipe as a blueprint, Patrick began to tweak the formula to make it perfect, aging his white sweet potatoes in a wine cellar for nine months to enhance their natural sweetness and cure them of their fear of the dark. Before long, Patrick's Famous Pies were in high demand at area farmer's markets, where he still sells them today alongside other specialties like sweet-potato bread and peach cobbler.
