The fall 2012 clinic will take place at Memorial Field at the Y, a recently constructed synthetic-turf field, where instructors will teach youth lessons in leadership, teamwork, and respect with fun baseball and softball drills. Under Armour gear and equipment will be provided, and the children will also receive lunch.
The Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric has a deep history that stretches back to the 1890s, when frequent polkas filled the air on summer evenings and the walls were decked out in beer-garden fashion. Throughout the following century, acts ranging from demonstrations of electric cooking to performances by Ella Fitzgerald and Robin Williams have inspired awe and given cause for recent restoration.
The Trawler Fest Boat Show is an in-water showcase of more than 60 cruising motorboats and also includes a shore-side expo, afternoon activities, and demonstrations of boating equipment and procedures. Anacortes is the second stop on this five-port event, which also includes San Diego, Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, and Warwick (RI). Produced by PassageMaker Magazine, Trawler Fest is a playground for boat lubbers and abandoned fish-people looking for a way back home. This deal gives you access to afternoon activities, including interactive demonstrations on topics such as life-raft inflation, man-overboard recovery, and how to use sound and light signals. Nautical newbies can learn a thing or two from PassageMaker Magazine and Ocean Voyager, two of several publications included in your complimentary welcome kit, along with a reusable tote bag and an assortment of yachty schwag, which is far less abominable than its homophonic cousin, yeti schwag. For an additional cost, you can attend seminars on safety, anchoring, finding your personal cruising style, and blaming your artfully popped collar on the brisk sea breeze.

As Tommy, one of Howl at the Moon's Chicago-based piano players, explains on the club’s website, “Every night…we try and throw a party, regardless of whether it’s a Tuesday night or a Saturday night.” The bar’s trademark dueling pianos serve as the epicenter of these nightly celebrations; patrons submit their favorite songs on slips of paper for the pianists and backing musicians to recreate. If the website’s playlist is any indication, the bands can handle popular songs from all genres and eras, from Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” to Kanye West’s “All of the Lights.” The performances are spirited: colorful lights splash upon a stage where servers, guests, and chairs that have somehow developed mobility all dance along to the music.
Fueling the celebration is the bar’s indulgent selection of drinks. Servers stand over patrons to plunge jello injectors into their mouths, and revelers grab colorful straws to help drain 86-ounce booze buckets filled with sangria or other fruity libations. Pomegranate liqueur and honey-infused whiskey sweeten specialty cocktails, and local beers add depth to coolers stocked with Stella Artois and Dos Equis.
You might see "Motown" or "80s" on the schedule, but InSync Cycle Studio is not a dance venue. These events still involve plenty of legwork, though—students pedal aboard stationary bikes as invigorating music blares all the while. During these sessions, they'll surmount imaginary hills with real resistance, or zoom through long straightaways at high speeds. Some might be marathoners, and others might be first-timers. It doesn't matter to the instructor at the head of the class, who makes sure that everyone's workout is suited to their experience.
Typically, these instructors are the ones in charge of the music. Most classes aren't themed, but follow a mix of tunes that mesh with the teacher's taste. Some will even time the rhythm of their inclines and sprints to match the song, which is why "Flight of the Bumblebee" has been banned forever. Regardless of the soundtrack, each low-impact lesson helps to tone muscle and build endurance in a communal, encouraging space.
Inside a practice space heated between 80 and 90 degrees, yogis Michele and Sean guide students of all ages and experience levels through the reinvigorating poses of Vinyasa power yoga. During up to two classes per day, the instructors help pupils master the style's breathing techniques and synchronized postures, which transition seamlessly into one another, much like a month of video-game playing leads to a Cheetos addiction. The heated room coaxes muscles into sinking into deeper stretches for increased flexibility and detoxifies bodies via sweat. A stock of free rental mats cushions guests throughout the session, and a free introductory course for new students allows novices to sample the Vinyasa style every Thursday night.
