For Felipe H. Galvan Jr., DDS, dentistry is a family tradition. As a third-generation dentist surrounded by family members who work in the field of dentistry, Dr. Galvan—or "Dr. Philip," as his patients and staff call him—has grown up with a devotion to helping others. He graduated from Centro Escolar University in Manila, Philippines, and became board certified in the U.S. in 2000. Since then, he has continued his medical education at Loma Linda University and UCLA, continuously seeking new techniques and treatments for his patients at Galvan Dental Care.
Within the office's cheerful yellow walls, he performs treatments ranging from Zoom! teeth whitening to smile-enhancing veneers. The sunny reception area is bedecked with an Asian-inspired painting, fuchsia orchid blossoms, and bamboo plants, whose circular growth could be easily straightened with a handful of custom Invisalign aligners if they could only consent.
In addition to sharing the same parents and dental practice, Drs. Son Pham and Thuy Pham share a devotion to beautifying and restoring teeth through the full range of family- and cosmetic-dentistry services. Dr. Son demonstrates this commitment by continually exceeding his yearly required hours of continuing education, staying abreast of such dental developments as non-mercury fillings, all-porcelain crowns, and whistling dentures. Dr. Thuy, meanwhile, volunteers each year at Remote Area Medical, an outreach program where she provides free dental care for the community.
The dentists' focus on advanced yet comfortable treatments carries into the decor of the practice. Guests are welcomed with cheery yellow walls and vibrant art and relax in treatment rooms sporting LCD flat-screen TVs, on which they can watch a movie of their choice while undergoing treatment.
Growing up in Iran, Dr. Mojdeh Hariri-Vijeh would spend hours inspecting her teeth in front of a mirror and often played dentist with her brothers and sisters. When she immigrated to the U.S., her love for incisors and bicuspids followed, prompting her to enroll in the world's first dental school, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland. This schooling not only bolstered her dental prowess, but also gave her the opportunity travel yet again—this time to a Navajo reservation in Arizona—where she cared for the oral health of both adults and children.
Now firmly ensconced in her Oakland practice, Dr. Vijeh leads an experienced team of hygienists and specialists in maintaining the natural beauty of teeth. The team uses state-of-the-art equipment, such as intra-oral cameras and advanced grin stimulators, to suss out and treat problems. When performing general, cosmetic, or restorative procedures, the team limits discomfort with nitrous oxide and provides headphones that fill ears with music or the entertaining banter from DVDs.
The team of dentists at Lake Merritt Dental combines their specialties to cover the full gamut of dentistry?from general and preventative care to cosmetic treatments. Dr. Hai Huang leads the team with 23 years of experience and a flair for collaboration, developing custom treatment plans in which she may tap in another dentist to perform a specialized step. Lake Merritt Dental team's advanced training in root canal treatment and prosthodontic placements in dental bridges, crowns, and implants, as well as their focus in oral hygiene, help clients maintain a bright, healthy smile.
The office is outfitted with some of the industry's most advanced equipment, such as ultrasonic scalers and intraoral cameras. Digital x-rays reveal the hidden goings-on among roots and bone while protecting patients from up to 90% of the radiation and kryptonite emitted from traditional x-ray machines. They also show appreciation for the environment with a green business certification and onsite bicycle parking.
