Wielding advanced strand-sculpting technology, the stylists at MCN Salon trick out tresses in an environment ripe with sleek sophistication. Makeover-hungry heads must first coax bodies into salon-provided robes, protecting clothing from shedding strands and curling irons that love to cuddle. A junior stylist, senior stylist, master stylist, or proprietor will then treat lady manes ($40+), man locks ($30+), or whipper-snapper wisps ($25+ for kids 12 and younger) to a sumptuous snip and styling. Once you're chicly shorn, bolster updated looks with one of the salon's complementing treatments. Tint less-than vibrant head noodles with an all-over shade ($65+) or attention-nabbing highlights ($85+), or rid the scalp of dryness and ghosts with a conditioning and clarifying treatment ($20+). Undesirable textures can also be renegotiated with a basic curl wrap ($85+), relaxer ($100+), or Brazilian blowout ($300+).

Capristo Salon & Wellness Spa is more than just a beauty haven—it's a family legacy. The late founder, Bruce Capristo, started styling hair at the age of 19. He owned and operated many successful salons in the Pittsburgh area beginning in the 1960s, including his flagship site—Capristo International—where he worked alongside his wife, Cheech. Bruce established a strong reputation while working in fashion, film, and television; he even styled hair on the set of the 1968 cult classic Night of the Living Dead.

The location that Bruce opened on Ellsworth Avenue has now been going strong for more than 25 years. When Bruce passed away in 2006, his son Roman—a master stylist who trained with the likes of Vidal Sassoon and Bumble and bumble—took over the business, continuing his father's dream. And although she no longer works as an aesthetician and stylist, you might still see Cheech helping out behind the scenes.

The laid-back atmosphere at the salon and spa keeps both clients and staffers happy; in fact, some of the stylists have been with the company since the very beginning. The crew hands out complimentary martinis on Wednesday evenings, pampering guests with custom facials and body wraps. In a private spa-party room filled with padded chairs and sheer drapery, the beauty experts ply brides-to-be or birthday girls with complimentary champagne and hors d'oeuvres.

Picture windows peek out of the brick building that houses Salon Cercone's three sunlit stories, where stylists tint locks with Wella Color system products. On the first level, the salon’s resident nail tech pampers mitts and paws while aestheticians evict stubble from face and body using Cirepil and Nufree waxes and tools. Rustic wood floors span the second and third stories, where hair caretakers sling Wella's German-manufactured Koleston Perfect color products across freshly sheared strands to expose any chameleons living on clients' heads. The salon also equips clients with Rusk, Tigi, and Moroccan Oil products so they can maintain soft, shiny tresses at home.

And for bridal parties, they make house calls, prepping brides-to-be on location or in the salon. Even their most basic haircut is done with careful attention to each client's face-shape, lifestyle, and preferred scrunchie elasticity.
