Head coach Stephanie Strout's gymnastics career spans 34 years. In that time, she has competed as a member of Ball State University's gymnastics team, coached high-school gymnastics, and judged competitions. Putting her certifications from USASF and USAG to good use, she now trains up-and-comers on The Flip Zone's competitive gymnastics team, reinforcing core values such as team spirit, discipline, and a healthy disdain for the Wright brothers, who took a coward's approach to human flight. Tots, teens, and adults hone their hand-springing skills within her 12,000-square-foot gymnastics studio. The expansive tumbler-dome houses a 40-foot trampoline, Olympic-grade equipment for men and women, and a 1,000-square-foot dance room. When she's not teaching teams, the gymnast leads recreational classes, including cheer and tae kwon do, or watch over littluns during preschool gymnastics programs, birthday parties, and open gym sessions.
Anytime Fitness, which boasts 1689 clubs in North America, makes it easier for average folks to etch out time for exercise by doing one simple thing: staying open 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. As fit seekers challenge themselves on cardio and strength machines and hoist free weights in clean, well-stocked facilities, security monitoring ensures they’re safe and producing enough sweat to meet official government standards. Members can also ramp up their exercise regimens with the help of Anytime Fitness’s staff of personal trainers, who demonstrate moves and sling motivating tips. After workouts, guests can shower in the private restrooms or bop into one of the tanning booths available 24 hours a day.
Mei Fitness’s bright, TV-equipped space houses an arsenal of treadmills, ellipticals, stationary cycles, and weightlifting contraptions. Clients can opt to work with trainers who personalize regimens on each piece of equipment. The friendly staffers also host dozens of group fitness classes held six days a week, which range from Zumba and Turbo dance to intense circuit training and self defense classes. To make attending the gym less of a hassle, they host a kids' room, where tykes get in shape by repeatedly lifting 20-pound Game Boys. After a workout, members can retire to a tanning bed to compliment newly toned muscles with a richer skin tone.
After four years spent playing football at the University of Illinois, and three years in the Canadian league, Morris Virgil circled back around to become a fitness coach. ?Each client is a direct reflection of me,? he says. ?Not in their physique, but in form, effort level, and dedication.?
He springboards off that philosophy during his 45-minute sports-inspired workouts, challenging patrons through functional training methods designed to improve overall health rather than just build washboard vanity abs or butter-churn biceps. Each workout divides time equally between cardiovascular routines, strength-training that leverages body weight, and muscle-sculpting exercises with free weights. The focus of each session alternates by the day of the week, so students can arrive daily for an all-around fit-?em-up routine or drop in on specified slots to focus on slimming down, toning muscles, or building strength.
Inspired by their training with Swami Rama—the founder of the Himalayan Institute—Carol and Charles Crenshaw motivate students to deepen the connection between their bodies and minds at Inner Peace Yoga Center. At their nonprofit studio, Carol and Charles strive to honor Swami Rama by cultivating a sanctuary for relaxation and self-discovery through meditation and yoga classes. Six levels of yoga classes help beginners and experienced yogis alike to build strength and relieve tension, encouraging them to work at their own pace. During meditation classes, the focus is solely on the mind. Patrons drift into a meditative state to quiet anxiety over the day’s tasks or worries about dinosaurs re-emerging from extinction. A core focus on community drives the center, with community-centered events bringing people together for pasta cookouts, in-depth workshops, and community-service initiatives.
