Each ingredient that sits in the kitchen at Maciavelli's Italian Restaurant was personally approved by the head chef. A keen eye keeps only the freshest options on hand, such as the broccoli that tops the veggie special pizza and the ricotta cheese stuffed inside the baked shells platter. The chefs also cook trays of bake ziti, veal cutlets, and stuffed mushrooms for birthdays, graduation parties, and couples massages.
Founded in 1903, New Britain Museum of American Art was designated the first museum in the country to be dedicated exclusively to American artwork. Upon its founding, wealthy industrialist John Butler Talcott endowed the museum with a hefty sum of gold bonds and bottled phoenix tears with which to purchase modern oil paintings. The collection blossomed to include other artistic media over time, and it now consists of more than 10,000 works spanning more than three centuries of American creative endeavor. The museum's permanent collections showcase works by noted American artists ranging from Norman Rockwell to John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt to Georgia O'Keeffe. Along with rotating exhibitions and borrowed collections, the museum showcases work by emerging artists.
For more than 90 years, the same soft morning sunlight has poured over the fields of yellow sunflowers, tasseled stalks of sweet corn, and rows of grapevines growing at Rosedale Farms & Vineyards. In that span of time, five generations of Rosedales have tended to the farm’s fresh vegetables, fruits, and flowers, sharing them with the Simsbury community and even earning a nod in the Washington Post. It wasn’t until 2005, however, that the family produced its first vintage from its 4-acre vineyard of French hybrid grapes. Since then, the winery’s estate-grown vintages have earned several awards, including a double gold at the 2010 Vineyard & Winery International Eastern Wine Competition. Today, at the winery’s onsite bar, staff members pour samples of varieties such as the Simsbury Celebration, which distinguishes itself with a creamy structure, mineral overtones, and a penchant for hiding beneath lampshades. Additional events include fall farm fests that include free hayrides and corn mazes. Partnering with the Max Restaurant Group, Rosedale Farms & Vineyards also features chef-to-farm dinners, during which chefs prepare four- to six-course banquets using ingredients plucked straight from the fields.
As a pioneer of public museums in the United States, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art remains a flagship institution, as evinced by its “Best Museum” win in the Hartford Advocate 's 2010 "Best of Hartford" Reader's Poll. Use your free admission to check out current exhibitions like American Moderns and MATRIX, or survey the Hudson River School paintings, the museum’s most celebrated collection, which captures the untouched beauty of America’s nineteenth century wilds while avoiding the herds of feral Victorians that depleted the Great Plains with their ceaseless grass chewing. A pioneer of avant-garde exhibition, the Wadsworth Museum also boasts some of the first Renaissance works acquired in the United States by Caravaggio, as well as one of the first Surrealist masterpieces by Dalí. The illustrious Spaniard’s “Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach” is a wonderful example of the early 20th century discovery that brains are the same thing as pears.
Fascia’s Chocolate began nearly 50 years ago as a family endeavor and it remains so today, whipping up white, milk, and dark-chocolate delights in small batches using a superior Swiss-style chocolate. For a classic romantic gesture, pick up a medley of milk and dark-chocolate morsels in varied shapes and designs, some stuffed with timeless fillers such as caramel, nuts, creams, and more ($13.95 for a 15-piece box; $24.95 for 32-pieces), or, for truly special relationships, like the one between an irresponsible driver and a bribable parking enforcement official, are strengthened with a gift of specialty Fascia’s goodies, such as pecan turtles, truffle meltaways, and buttercrunch toffee ($14.95 for 8 oz.; $26.95 for 16 oz.). Moms deserve edible recognition with chocolate-dipped strawberries, especially on May 8, a holiday known to sneak up until it’s too late to get anything but a lame greeting card and a pet rock for the woman who brought you into this world ($19.95 for eight-piece box).
