In 1927, The Southland Ice Company’s icehouses were one of the few refuges from the searing Dallas heat and marauding bands of tumbleweeds. That same year, the company’s employees realized the frigid temperatures could also preserve items such as milk and eggs. Soon, as more items and services such as gasoline were gradually added to the operation, the company expanded to stores called Totem’s. To account for the boom in popularity, the stores were kept open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and to reflect these new hours, the store name was changed to 7-Eleven.
Today, 7-Eleven has nearly 50,000 locations in 16 countries. The stores are now open 24/7 and sell everything from iconic Slurpee and Big Gulp drinks to coffee, hot dogs, baked goods, and signature 7-Select products. The store’s involvement in the community matches its commitment to convenience, with generous charity donations and a pledge to the safe sale of age-restricted products.
Ulta's licensed staff, which partakes in ongoing training to keep skills sharp, creates customized looks and expert image enhancement using acclaimed beauty products. Like a loaf of bread in a space shuttle with a broken sunroof, hairstyles can grow stale between salon visits. A 45-minute coif-cultivation session, in which the stylist takes into account face shape and lifestyle, energizes follicles and forges a salon-fresh look. In the one-hour Dermalogica facial, an aesthetic augur examines skin in order to customize a course of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing session with Dermalogica products. The treatment leaves skin impeccable, like a recently buffed and oiled slab of marble.
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Our products are made with as many non-GMO all natural and/or organic ingredients as possible, and we do not use any type of additives or preservatives in our chocolate. We also specialize in a variety of items for people who suffer from food allergies including gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
It's chocolate; who wouldn't want to work with chocolate every day? It's not a job, it's definitely an adventure!
What do you love most about your job?
We love chocolate, and we love people. Who wouldn't want to make people happy by creating delicious chocolates to share with them? We love to see the smile on someone's face when they indulge in our chocolates for the first time, or tenth time!
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
The majority of people who purchase from us tell us that we have the best chocolate they've ever eaten. We have fans of "other" chocolate companies who tell us they never go back because they've fallen in love with our award-winning products!
When area residents founded the Kendall County Fair in 1841, they wanted to show off their prize livestock and share agricultural techniques. They held chariot races, served ice cream, and showed exhibitions of horticulture, needlework, and machinery. Then, after 53 years, the old fair was forced to close its gates in August 1907 due to expenses and declining ticket sales. In 1993, a group of volunteers conspired to resurrect the show and continue its mission of education and entertainment.
Today, livestock compete for blue ribbons and local canines are groomed to battle in a dog show. Nashville country-music artists suffuse the air with their twangy observations on life and brave souls climb aboard modern machinery to charge through obstacle courses during lawn-mower races. Amid all this excitement, the fair’s organizers also host an antique-tractor parade, attempting to keep old machines running in a straight line—a feat more difficult than reprogramming a robot dog with new software.
