MoveStudio, an adults-only fitness and relaxation center, fills its 6,200 square feet of space with specially-crafted floating wood floors, soft lighting, and modern decor. Instead of pounding away on fitness machines, exercisers jump into more than 65 group classes designed to get bodies moving.
Pilates Core Fusion tones abs and backs, and the Raise the Barre! ballet workout strengthens even the smallest muscles. Energetic Zumba sessions combine fun dance moves with music to blast calories, as does belly dancing and the Burlesque Shimmy & Tone class. After an intense workout, exercisers head to the infrared sauna for relaxation and therapeutic heat.
In order to give its patrons some time away from the kids to work out and discuss TIF districts, MoveStudio only accommodates people 15 and older. Though there are no onsite childcare facilities, it does partner with a nearby gym and kids’ center to offer discounted childcare.
When Dancing With the Stars' contestants Emmitt Smith, Mark Cuban, Michael Irvin, and Jake Pavelka needed a place to sharpen their rug-cutting capabilities, Cheryl Burke told them to look no further than Studio 22. Studio 22's talented instructors even performed on Dancing With the Stars in October of 2012. Founded by internationally ranked Latin dancing couple Sergey Korshunov and Michelle Hafle, the studio lassos a stable of instructors handpicked from the highest levels of professional competition. Their group classes and private lessons give beginners and seasoned dancers alike the opportunity to polish their performance in styles as diverse as Argentine tango, salsa, ballroom, swing, and country and western.
The 6,200-square-foot studio accommodates classes of every size with its rich wooden floors, wall-length mirrors, and plush leather seating with which to rest feet between exercises and build forts whenever the instructor leaves the room. Studio 22 also hosts weekly dance parties that give students a chance to take new partners for a twirl in convivial, BYOB soirées.
Husband and wife duo Tabora and Toy Laster, owners of Choice Training Group Fitness, electrify the studio with their characteristic energy. Whether they're dressing up in hokey hula shirts to promote Zumba fitness parties or bringing in guest instructors to host self-defense sessions, the two aim to create a gym that feels like an inclusive club.
Newbies and old hats jump into a diverse set of classes, ranging from group fitness and boot camp, to pole-dancing sessions in the Kandy & Krome room, a mirror-lined, pole-bestrewn sanctuary for flirty fitness. Alongside high-energy cardio classes such as Belly Dance Fusion, Absolute Abs, or Zumba, the studio hosts bachelorette parties, couples massage sessions, and workshops on effective methods for releasing stress.
Power House of Dance's experienced instructors teach feet of any age how to tap, twirl, and tip-toe through a multitude of classes. Boasting two studios lined with mirrors that reveal the fairest dancer of all, the crew of artistic movers guides grownups through their choice of five classes selected from a flexible schedule, with styles including hip hop, ballroom, and yoga. A modern contemporary class introduces dancers 10 and older to routines packed with expressive flourishes while a ballet course challenges physiques to perfect grand jetes and pirouettes until they are as graceful as a swan on ice skates.
Dance is all about motion, so it’s fitting that Dancer-Strong began as a mobile dance-teaching operation. Skilled instructors have traveled all-over to different studios to educate students. Eventually, the desire to teach a full schedule of classes led the group to open their four-studio academy in 2012. They quickly expanded their offerings with a selection of fitness classes.
Today, the instructors teach 11 forms of dance as well as 11 different fitness classes, and an outdoor boot camp. In the next room, they might be torching calories with Zumba or kickboxing. They also teach students how to perform classical steps in ballet and move to the contemporary rhythms of hip hop. They even offer an entire track of dance classes geared toward home-schooled students’ unique schedules.
