Each season, the gifted student thespians of Diablo Valley College dazzle audiences with moving productions of classic works and contemporary plays. Satisfy your dramatic hankerings with a trio of the 2011 to 2012 season's artfully staged offerings, starting with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet , a moving tragedy inspired by the classic musical West Side Story (October 21–30). A striking, challenging contemporary piece, The Skriker fills the stage with magical realism, shape-shifting, and unearthly characters (February 3–12, 2012; restricted to adults 18 years and older). Diablo Valley's young stage stalkers also tackle Arthur Miller's The Crucible, a stirring depiction of the Salem witch hunts of the 17th century and a poignant allegory for the anticommunist hysteria of the 1950s, when Americans were required by law to consume at least three apple pies a day (March 23–31, 2012).
Julianna Freed developed a love of putting dinner on the table early on, helping her dad fish along the West Coast. Back at home in the kitchen, she watched her mother turn the catch into new dishes and fresh takes on familiar recipes. And when she visited her grandfather’s house, she got to wander among his garden’s vegetable plants and fruit trees. Though she spent years working as a middle-school teacher, this food-focused upbringing and the enthusiasm of independent producers at her local farmers’ market eventually spurred her to create Chef Julianna, which provides catering, cooking classes, and personal-chef services.
Julianna and her chefs adhere to strict standards of farm-to-table dining; in catering and cooking, they use local and sometimes organic meat, produce, and cheese harvested from local farmers’ markets. Before each private cooking class, Julianna’s chef-instructors meet with customers in their kitchen for a consultation, during which they survey the existing amenities and check for poltergeists hiding in the cabinets. At class time, they arrive with their own ingredients and cookware to coach students in common cooking methods and recipes for the customer’s chosen culinary style. Personal and private chefs carry the personal attention even further, planning meals, shopping for groceries, and cooking in customers’ preferred styles.
Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District gives families all the motivation they need to get outside for open-air fun. The park district puts youngsters on the path to athleticism and good sportsmanship with youth sports leagues, including soccer, flag football, and karate. Adults can even get in on some old fashioned, friendly competition in leagues of their own, feeling the satisfaction of connecting with a kickball or the sense of accomplishment in lawfully taking possession of your opponent’s 401K by stealing his flag football flag. Aquatic aspirations take shape at the community pool, which offers public swimming, swim lessons, summer camps, and a place for rubber duckies to live out their retirement in peace. For more intellectually oriented endeavors, kids and adults can sign up for a slew of classes, such as art, dance, and music. In addition to homegrown activities, the park district organizes adult field trips to far-flung locales. You can register for an Alaskan cruise, a railroad trip through the Colorado Rockies, or a safari in Kenya.
