Arthur Murray Dance Studio has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, the Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with other classmates as the instructors assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.
Premier Ballroom Studio enlists a cadre of experienced instructors to teach dancers ballroom-bound footwork during classes held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. Each lesson focuses on a different style of social ballroom dance, with recent classes covering the waltz and cha-cha, West Coast swing, and the Groucho Marx glide. Classes are followed by a social dance party, where students can pair off to practice the steps and learn to sense the proper moment to back-flip off a partner's shoulders. Strut through Premier Ballroom Studio's 8,126-square-foot facility, which is equipped with a 3,240-square-foot main dance floor and a smaller, cozier 750-square-foot studio floor. A state-of-the-art sound and lighting system coaxes out fleet-footed performances.
The trainers at Underground Fitness II inspire their guests to conquer their fitness goals—big or small—through high-energy group workouts in an encouraging atmosphere backed by heart-pumping beats. They also integrate plyometrics, which typically focus on non-weight workouts such as box jumps and squat jumps. During Zumba and U-Jam classes, the instructors transform the studio into a club scene, as patrons bust a move powered by pulsing Latin or hip-hop tunes.
To help patrons recover from vigorous workouts, a team licensed physical therapists stand at the ready to massage muscles, making more relaxed than a sloth tubing down a tryptophan river.
The studio fills with the pitter-patter of little feet; only those feet are pitter-pattering with grace and rhythm. At B*Dazzled Dancers, enthusiastic instructors guide students aged 3 and older through dance classes that build coordination and fitness. Classes run the gamut from jazz and tap to tumbling, hip-hop, and ballet. Adults can also take many of these classes, as well as fitness dance classes that boost athletic ability and endurance.
Drop into hip-hop (Tuesday, 8–9 p.m.) to energize your stale disco moves; materialize in tap (Wednesday, 7–8 p.m.) to invigorate your toes with rhythm; dance and shake off the calories, Latin-style, with Zumba (Thursday, 8–9 p.m.); or open up a can of grace with ballet (Saturday, 12–1 p.m.). With five gleaming studios and a full squad of certified dance instructors breaking the beat together under a single roof, this much dance has not been gathered in one place since the release of YouTube as a DVD box set. The drop-in classes are designed to accommodate dancers of all skill and experience levels. The small class size ensures the type of personal attention formerly only children longed for upon the arrival of a newborn baby brother. Sign up with a few friends to gain new moves and lose a few pounds in the process.
