Named 2009 Micro Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine, Klatch Coffee's casual coffeterias celebrate some of the world's highest quality coffee, carefully sourced to international farmers under direct trade ethics. Roasted in small batches for maximum freshness and minimum inter-bean squabbling, Klatch's java pleases patrons with a drip coffee of the day ($1.95–$2.20), as well as designer drinks such as the Mexican mocha ($3.40–$4.30), infused with spicy Ibarra chocolate. Discerning slurpers can also sate barking bellies with a hammy, cheesy eggel sandwich ($3.99) from the breakfast menu, or train teeth on heartier lunch fare such as a cranberry walnut salad ($3.75) or turkey pesto panini ($5.95).

Nearly 15 years ago, Lollicup Coffee & Tea founder Alan Yu helped introduce America to a drink popular in his native Taiwan: boba milk tea (a.k.a. bubble tea), named for the chewy tapioca balls known as boba that hang suspended in the beverage. These gummy treats make the drink something of a snack, too?people slurp them up using oversize straws, chewing them between sips or collecting them in their cheek pouches. Lollicup's specialty is milk tea flavored with almond, jasmine, coconut, or other infusions, but boba can also be added to most of Lollicup's other colorful drinks, from grapefruit green tea to watermelon juice and signature soy pudding. There's food, too: shareable morsels of fried meats and veggies, or rice plates if a well-rounded meal is in order. Thanks to word of mouth and a spot on the Food Network's Unwrapped, Lollicup has expanded to dozens of locations across the country and has outposts opening soon in Europe and the Middle East.

In mid-20th century America, a place that called itself a "coffee shop" was probably a small, casual restaurant serving hearty meals and industrial-grade coffee. In some ways, Bean Town Coffee House & Bakery hearkens back to that model, although the coffee?a private-label blend from The Sierra Madre Roasting Company?is surely a lot better. Gourmet burgers start sizzling on the grill around noon, drawing hungry lunchers on break from work or burger-making school. Patties come in three varieties: standard beef, turkey, or black bean, any one of which slides easily into creations such as the Bean Town burger, topped with black bean and corn spread, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo. Being a bakery, Bean Town has dessert covered, too. Guests can opt for sweet stuff such as a scoop of the Fosselman's ice cream, fresh-baked pastries, or a complimentary slice of warm Wi-Fi.
