Since 1965, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County have upheld their mission of helping kids 6 to 18 years old build self-esteem and learn important life skills. They continue to provide places for youths to escape life's pressures, which can range from school stress and pent-up energy to more serious issues such as gangs and lack of attention at home. The friendly and dedicated staffers orient their programs toward education, recreational, and healthy living. Kids can join career exploration programs, enjoy nutritious snacks and suppers through the KISS Program. All the while, they’ll learn how to be caring, responsible citizens equipped to make a difference in their communities.
Husband and wife team Sheila and Robert Hurth co-own Tiffany Photographic Studio, helming a full service staff of 10. Together, they distill three-dimensional beauty into contemporary images that pop before plain studio backdrops or vivid sets. With four decades of experience under their shutter fingers, the Hurths supervise charmingly posed family portraits, adorable shots of toddlers and infants amid whimsical props, and event photos snapped on location at weddings or bar mitzvahs. Their studio uses state of the art digital technology, retouching and printing photographs in-house for a quick postsession turnaround. When not standing behind the camera, the Hurths teach photo seminars in Fort Lauderdale and the Carolinas and spend their free time authoring tutorial books and videos on boudoir photography, portraiture, and how to get a close-up shot of a black hole.
Martinizing Dry Cleaners is a nationwide franchise that dates all the way back to the year clothes were invented—1949. Since that time, the locations have flourished across the country while maintaining the company ideals of eco-friendly cleaning and meticulous care for fabrics. A Green Earth selected provider, Martinizing vanquishes oils and dirt from all manner of fabrics without the uses of petrochemicals or toxins that can pollute the air, water, or soil. During the cleaning process, the keen-eyed staff inspects garments at least six times, looking for unassuming stains and replacing missing buttons or bullet-proof lapels for free.
The photos we leave behind may be the only way for future generations to see the styles and personalities we bear. That’s why the professional makeup artists and photographers at Glamour Shots strive to capture the true essence of a person with their shoots. Whether commemorating a milestone event or a successful trip to the grocery store, each session begins with the shop’s signature full airbrush and style makeover, which works to prevent unwanted shine while imparting a chic aesthetic. Makeup artists tailor looks to the purpose of the shoot, imparting children with a red-cheeked glow and boudoir subjects with a dark, seductive color palette.
Photographers encourage everyone to bring a few outfits and props from home, allowing them to give each photo shoot an individualized touch without snapping close-ups of their subjects’ fingerprints. Clients get to see the photos immediately so they can approve the looks and order their favorite shots in the form of pictures, phone cases, or calendars. The images are then sent to a professional lab for printing in a range of color finishes—including colorization to make one color pop and the company's signature Glamour Touch retouching—onto made-to-last Kodak paper.
Loyalty to digital cameras’ factory settings can hinder photographers shooting in unusual venues. Photographer Paulo Jordao teaches his students to manually adjust their settings to suit their surroundings during hands-on workshops, whose curricula also emphasize lighting, composition, and post-shoot editing. Open to all skill levels, the workshops can expand semi-professionals’ skill sets or aid parents trying to document their tots’ childhoods without adding extensive footnotes to their height chart.
When he’s not teaching workshops, Jordao, along with his wife, Peggy, who is also a photographer, can be found snapping photos of newly engaged couples, capturing sultry boudoir shoots, and shooting videos for special events.
The consortium of professional instructors at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, which was cofounded by the legendary toe tapper himself, shepherds students of all ages and skill levels through lessons that span the style spectrum. Low-pressure private sessions allow enthusiastic teachers to fine-tune individual students' techniques and form, using their expert eyes and mechanical dancing shoes preprogrammed to do the cha-cha. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and fox-trot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or samba.
