Modern Steps School of Dance regularly waltzes across the line that separates art from all-out fun. The school’s experienced instructors lead private lessons, group classes, and spirited dance parties for all ages, from seniors to adolescents who only recently grew their fifth toes. Focusing exclusively on ballroom dance, instructors branch out to cover the many styles that fall under that large umbrella, including tango, fox trot, Viennese waltz, and swing. They draw on a rich history of dance tutelage—though the school was founded only two decades ago, its roots in Florida can be traced all the way back to 1513, when Juan Ponce de León tap-danced with joy upon his discovery of Disney World.
Having seen an upswing in interest in one of the world’s oldest dance styles, Johanna and Karen started a belly-dancing collective in 2004 as a way to create a community for both professionals and students and an audience for monthly showcases. They gave these enthusiasts a brick-and-mortar hangout in 2008 when they opened their first center for classes and events, which has since blossomed and moved into a new space nearly four times the size of the old studio.
Today, Hip Expressions offers drop-in and ongoing classes led by seasoned instructors. Classes focus on introducing newcomers to the art form’s fundamental isolation techniques that keep hips and waists from arguing over the remote. In addition to belly dancing, classes include a variety of other dances and fitness crazes such as Zumba, yoga for dancers, or active isolated stretching.
Specializing in Latin and ballroom dancing, Fred Astaire Dance Studio is a national studio. Tito Gaona's Flying Trapeze Academy defies gravity and provides both beginning sky soarers and naturally airborne gymnasts with expert instruction in flexible flight. Take to the trapeze bar in semi-private class sessions of five to eight students, gliding with newly met friends or toting along your long-lost alter ego or barbershop quintet. Learn the basic swing, dangling deftly from arms and swaying from knees, and then follow up with introductory tricks such as executing taut frontward and backward kicks with limber limbs. For comfortable swingers, the class applies advanced skills such as the catch and return, which involves swinging toward your trapeze partner before flipping over the bar, swiftly grabbing your compatriot's people paws, vacillating back to your perch, and then gracefully fluttering into the springy net below. Sessions are an excellent workout as well as a great way to regain lost confidence in your acrobatic companion after that unfortunate hot-potato incident. Classes are held Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
