Marine Corps Sergeant Ron Davis gave 10 years of service to the military. He also spent most of his life involved in youth sports, serving as head coach and defensive coordinator for youth football teams. With BeStrong Boot Camp, he implements strategies that he learned in both of his previous fields to devise a team-oriented workout program that incorporates all the motivational factors, full-body fitness techniques, and guided instruction one would need to get in shape. Nobody at BeStrong will say that the regimen is easy, but it's achievable. The 45-minute, military-like workouts, which occur three times a week for six weeks, benefit from Ron's encouragement as opposed to just a collective hivemind pushing everyone subconsciously. Ron gives each student personal attention and helps them modify any workouts to align with their physical needs.
The certified personal trainers at Brevard's Premier Personal Training & Bootcamp are masters of motivation. They enthusiastically coach participants through private and group fitness classes, which start off with an active warm-up session to cultivate flexibility. Then, they turn weak sinews into chiseled muscles through a resistance-training regimen that includes weights and medicine balls.
Diane Schullstrom, owner and CrossFit-certified instructor at Space Coast Adventure Boot Camp, draws on more than 25 years of fitness-industry experience as she leads her boot-camp classes. Schullstrom and her staff host the sessions—small in size for individual attention—in three different parks for scenic workouts. This program has been running strong for the past six years, and welcomes students of all fitness levels by providing modifications that increase or decrease intensity. While parents sculpt fitter frames, children over age five are welcome to play in the park.
Flipping tires, lugging fire hoses, and lifting weights are an everyday occurrence at IHB CrossFit. Husband-and-wife trainers Melanie and Camden Drake—who are both certified in CrossFit Level 1 and higher—design new workouts every day that present new and exciting challenges to IHB CrossFit’s athletes. The workouts seldom repeat and often include exercises such as running, rowing, weight lifting, and bodyweight exercises such as pushups, pull-ups, and sit-ups.
At Control Results, members work out in a modernly appointed studio, complete with a fresco of Da Vinci’s The Creation of Adam on one wall to remind patrons of the physical ideal they’re shooting for. Along with passionate and certified trainers, the gym boasts a staff that includes a consulting physician, a physical therapist, and a registered dietician. Trainers work to jump-start healthier bodies for new customers, as well as offer sport-specific conditioning and coaching for competitive bodybuilders.
After training for weeks, runners take their positions at the starting line, wait for the signal, and adjust the regulation sombreros attached to the tops of their helmets. Upon hearing the starting gun, they all bolt forward?only to tumble into a pit that puts them neck deep in oozy, disgusting, glorious mud.
Participants in the American Mud Race replicate this scene as they take on a 3- to 4-mile mud-filled obstacle course, all in the effort to benefit wounded veterans through the Home at Last Project by West Orange Habitat for Humanity. Afterward, racers bring home their mud-caked clothing and costumes to take revenge against their bathtubs, or they can replace them at the race site with a free T-shirt. Food and drink wristbands entitle their wearers to barbecue lunches and beer at the after party, where live music and DJs provide a soundtrack for dancing.
