You'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to begin a race than near a sculpture of Aesop's Tortoise & Hare. Add to that its proximity to one of the nation's most well-known cross-country tracks, and it's the perfect starting point for Trail Master Killah, a 5K through Van Cortlandt Park's hills, wetlands, and forests. Participants will receive a race T-shirt, and top performers will take home a handmade trophy from SKT Ceramics. Registration also includes food and beer at the post-race party, which, thanks to organization by one of A Tribe Called Quest's producers, will feature some of the city's best hip-hop DJs. Proceeds go to Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, a community group that promotes conservation of the park and texts the trees when they're feeling lonely.
As part of the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex, located at the historic Chelsea Piers, the Golf Club perches over the same port that once welcomed ships into New York City. Now, golfers tee up in the driving range's 52 heated and weather-protected stalls, which overlook the glinting waters of the Hudson River. Automatic tee-up systems position balls for launch across the 200-yard, net-enclosed fairway. A putting green allows patrons to improve their short game, and two Full Swing simulators encourage them to take hacks in virtual environs, transporting them to famous courses across the country or fifth-grade birthday parties where they missed the pi?ata.
Children and adults alike can enlist in Golf Club at Chelsea Piers? classes, which stratify students by experience level. The 12-member coaching staff includes PGA and LPGA professionals, and sessions take place in a 2,000-square-foot teaching facility.
In addition to the sense of perseverance and accomplishment that comes with finishing a 5K, the organizers of the Bacon Chase have added another incentive: bacon. During their two races?the 5K Piggy Pilgrimage, which is a traditional 5K, and the 0.05K Blitz to Bacon, which is a 164-foot sprint?runners can munch on unlimited bacon bits before feasting on unlimited amounts of bacon at the finish line. Runners 21 and older can wash down the savory strips of bacon with a bloody mary, and all runners get a Bacon Chase T-shirt and a signature bacon-scented bib. The festival opens at 8 a.m. and features many bacon-themed activities, plus music.
The festive day serves a greater purpose, too. Attendees will be able to register to become a St. Jude Hero, raise money for St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, or both.
The Urban Dare Adventure Race is a fast-paced competition that challenges two-person teams to decipher clues, navigate the city, and perform playful stunts. Combining the bustle of a track meet with the brain-taxing sleuth work of a luge competition, the race uses a dozen trivia-based clues to lead contestants to checkpoints all over their sprawling metropolis. Location hunters reach their checkpoints by whatever means necessary, be it hopping a bus downtown, flying madly through a network of secret ziplines, or scuba-diving in a fountain for bus fare. At the mini destinations, racers must use a camera to document their presence or, in some cases, get their passports stamped after completing challenges that may include a climbing wall or solving a riddle.
Oren Lippmann has made a career out of training NBA players such as Kris Humphries and Metta World Peace, both of whom needed his demanding regimen to stay strong in the post. You might not have to bang with the likes of a 7-foot center, but Lippmann's classes at CrossFit Glendale aren't just designed for professional athletes.
Along with fellow coach Al Pena, Lippmann oversees hour-long workouts that touch on all the major aspects of fitness at the 4,000 square foot Queens location, including endurance, flexibility, and strength. With equipment such as kettlebells and climbing ropes at their disposal, the coaches can devise functional, full-body workouts for all skill levels, focusing on form, technique, and fun.
