The music programming at the nonprofit Maine Academy of Modern Music is designed to allow pupils to rock out to their favorite contemporary jams. During individualized lessons, teachers help students master the basics of rock instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, and more. From there, young rockers can enlist in one of the school's rock bands, where they'll learn to play alongside other musicians as a group. A patient fretboard cartographer gives students the key to unlock their own melodious maps in private lessons that chart harmonic scales and outline the murky waters of musical theory. With more than 17 years of playing experience in jazz and classical styles, instructor Nick Caine Rausch passes on guitar knowledge—from harmonic scales to musical theory—that he gleaned from supple-fingered songsmiths such as locals Keith Crook and Gary Wittner. Beginners and advanced players alike will benefit from one-hour lessons tailored to accommodate each student’s needs and preferences, with styles ranging from the popular (rock and blues) to the obscure (Russian disco-blues and twelve-tone twee).
As a child, Jason Litalien watched Cheers with his dad; even then, he knew that in the future he wanted to open a neighborhood sports bar inspired by the hit television show's signature watering hole. Duty came first, though; Jason enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for 13 years, keeping his dream alive all the while. Three years ago, he returned from service and opened The Frosty Pint, a friendly pub decorated with Boston sports memorabilia, including a neon Celtics sign and framed Red Sox and Tom Brady jerseys. Cooks curate a menu of American favorites such as chicken wings drenched in teriyaki or thai honey sauce, jalapeño poppers, and deep-fried baseballs. Bartenders, meanwhile, fill glasses with 20 types of draft beer, pour a handful of wines, and mix spirits into cocktails. The Frosty Pint also has an outdoor seating area with umbrellas to protect them from the elements.
Bikram yoga isn't meant to be easy, but it isn't meant to be impossible either. The 105-degree heat, 40% humidity, and 26 challenging asanas—which incorporate deep bends as well as long, sustained stretches—all share a common goal: helping students safely push their physical limits while gaining a greater understanding of the connection between mind and body.
During each 90-minute class, the asanas' twists and arches create a tourniquet effect, systematically engaging muscle groups throughout the body before releasing the stretch and flooding cells with oxygenated blood flow. The practice room's intense heat accentuates this effect by loosening muscles and ligaments throughout each pose and increasing circulation. To help students tailor the practice to a particular skill or fitness level, the instructors can recommend modified stances that put less strain on the joints and require fewer hoverboots.
Over time, the sequence can improve flexibility and stamina while also increasing muscle tone and helping with weight-loss efforts. In addition, its two breathing exercises encourage a sense of introspective calm that can leave students feeling reinvigorated outside of class.
