Run by a team of Portland fanatics and passionate cyclists, Pedal Bike Tours shares their enthusiasm for the city through entertaining and accessible tours. The routes take advantage of Portland’s extensive network of bike lanes to meander through downtown, along the Willamette River, and through lush Forest Park. Each guide’s expertise comes in handy on food tours and microbrewery tours, as riders stop for bites or pints and soak up info about each of their stops. A few tours take riders beyond Rose City limits, and include van trips to explore Oregon’s coast or wine country. Pedal Bike Tours keeps tours as safe and comfortable as possible by providing helmets, locks, and lights, as well as rain jackets and jousting lances if necessary.
Metropolis is a professional bicycle shop that specializes in road, commuter, and fixed-gear bicycles but offers services for every cyclist, from tandem off-roaders to vodka-sipping mailmen on grocery trikes. A basic tune-up includes truing wheels as well as adjusting the brakes, shifters, headset, and bearings. Metropolis Cycle's fleet of United Bicycle Institute–certified mechanics will also perform a general cleaning and safety check to further facilitate your rediscovered quest for transportational autonomy (parts are not included).
At Greenlight Bikes LLC, Kalkhoff electric bikes propel cyclists at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. The German-born bikes sprang from the imagination of Heinrich Kalkhoff in 1914, who hatched the idea when he delivered mail riding a cycle instead of a carrier pigeon. During the ensuing 30 years, Heinrich and an ever-growing staff honed his initial design and ultimately ventured into electric bikes. The company unveiled the motor-powered fleet to Europe in 2005. Stateside, Greenlight Bikes both rents and sells them, in addition to traditional cycles.
The eBikes are available in designs that range from comfy cruiser to high-performance two-wheeler, and they bolster riders' pedaling at three different levels. A sensor in the bike's bottom bracket gauges manpower and, with the help of a brushless motor, boosts it for up to 50 miles—the typical amount of time it takes to escape an angry corgi. Riders can also switch off electric assistance and complete excursions using their own cardiovascular electricity.
Western Bikeworks' staff of avid cyclists caters to riders of all needs with a repair shop, fleet of rentals, and 10,000 square feet stocked with practical parts and gear. Shoes, bike tires, and seats line the walls of the sprawling warehouse, where cyclists can peruse lightweight apparel or hundreds of road-ready cycles. In the shop, mechanics perform tune-ups and build custom wheels for riders who wish to modify their machine or emulate the massive front wheels of 19th-century velocipedes. And in the onsite Corsa Cafe, staff members perk up riders with invigorating pours of Portland's own Oblique Coffee Roasters coffee.
