Hamburger Mary flipped her first burger in 1972 in San Francisco’s SOMA district. "Theatresports" splits performers into two teams who issue challenges to each other, using audience suggestions to out-funny their opponents. Unlike "Micetro," "Theatresports" is scored by Brody's judges, to whom the audience should direct boos and marriage proposals. Crowds can carbo-load their chuckle muscles with a selection of food and drinks, including wraps (starting at $6), beers (starting at $2.75), and wine (starting at $4).
Sisters Of The Road was born in 1979, when an anonymous person used chalk to draw a circle containing three Xs—the hobo symbol for good food and hospitality—on the sidewalk in front of the organization's new restaurant in the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood. The founders paid for the space with $10 and bartered for the rent.
Today, visitors who can't afford the typical $1.25 price tag for a meal at the café also can barter work in exchange for their food—much of which is donated by local grocery stores. At Mix 'N' Match Creamery, the process of getting an ice cream is almost as fun as eating it. After asking what flavor you'd like, a staff member places cream, sugar, and milk in a metal bowl, then blasts the mixture with a splash of liquid nitrogen that creates a sub-zero environment. As the cold, condensed-water cloud over the mixture evaporates, all that's left is wholesome, three-ingredient ice cream. The flavor options that can be added to the mix are virtually endless, as the team blends their many syrups with unique mix-ins, including chunks of cheesecake, bits of bacon, and crunchy Lucky Charms. The resulting treat can be scooped into a cone or waffle bowl to create a dessert that is easily portable and can be eaten in its entirety, much like a tin can of goat food.
