  • The Portland Arts Foundation 2012
Portland musicians bask in peer recognition while fans savor celebrity appearances and thrilling performances at The Portland Music Awards, a red-carpet event championing the best of the Northwest music scene. Resembling the Grammy Awards without the pig Latin acceptance speeches, the PMAs grace the historic environs of the Crystal Ballroom to disperse 22 awards in categories honoring genres, clubs, radio stations, and record stores, and a lineup of musical acts and celebrity appearances peppers the evening with songs, jokes, and Portland pride. The show showcases an eclectic lineup of acts, from Kandles at Nine with Deen Castronovo from Journey, as well as founding Heart guitarist Roger Fisher and “867-5309/Jenny” instigators Tommy Tutone. Hot-shot celebrities, including Daniel Baldwin, comedian Dax Jordan, and Bethy Rossos also appear in the three-hour show, which is broadcast live on Freedom 970 AM and taped in HD for a later television broadcast. The PMAs are voted on by the public and by genre professionals, unlike the Grammys or VMAs, which just throw a bingo marker into a room of buttered weasels.

  • Challenge Nation
During the challenge, teams of two or more individuals will run helter-skelter around the city in a frantic race for cash prizes and personal pride, with a first-place award of $200. Not only will participants have to solve strands of interconnected clues that would test the deductive powers of even the most seasoned consulting detective, they'll need to plot spatiotemporal stratagems while exploring undiscovered corners of the city. Although being physically fit is a plus, quick wits and wise planning will ultimately determine the winners. Participation in the challenge gets contestants a clue packet, race-number bib, and T-shirt, and fees also help toward contributions to partner charities and the prize pool. The website offers a regular FAQ and Groupon FAQ page with further details on the intricacies of the race, what to wear the day of, why it's not okay to bring a boa constrictor, and more.

  • Ecopalooza
Ecopalooza unites fashion, wine, and jazz in a symphony of sun-fueled fundraising at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The entirely solar-powered festival begins with a stylish eco-fashion show showcasing sustainable dud designs. As local wineries and breweries pour samples of their artisanal tipples, a lineup of jazz virtuosos, including two-time Grammy winner Shannon Sanders with R & B saxophonists Patrick Lamb and Devin Phillips, will trounce across the stage in a whirlwind of syncopation. Prolific Motown drummer Mel Brown, whose beats have accompanied Diana Ross and The Temptations, will also tickle festival-goers’ gray matter as he rhythmically taps out Morse-code instructions for harnessing the sun’s rays to power eco-friendly dog sleds. Proceeds from the concert will join donations from concert sponsor Bonneville Environmental Foundation and their Solar 4R Schools program to install solar panels in a Portland high school.

  • Red Frog Events
In addition to the sense of perseverance and accomplishment that comes with finishing a 5K, the organizers of the Bacon Chase have added another incentive: bacon. During their two races?the 5K Piggy Pilgrimage, which is a traditional 5K, and the 0.05K Blitz to Bacon, which is a 164-foot sprint?runners can munch on unlimited bacon bits before feasting on unlimited amounts of bacon at the finish line. Runners 21 and older can wash down the savory strips of bacon with a bloody mary, and all runners get a Bacon Chase T-shirt and a signature bacon-scented bib. The festival opens at 8 a.m. and features many bacon-themed activities, plus music. The festive day serves a greater purpose, too. Attendees will be able to register to become a St. Jude Hero, raise money for St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, or both.

  • Oregon Ballet Theatre
Since debuting in 1989, the Oregon Ballet Theatre has built its reputation on two seemingly opposed elements: strict balletic classicism and newly commissioned works. Now the theatre enters a new era under artistic director Kevin Irving, whose background spans both classical and contemporary performances. As a dancer, Irving appeared with scores of companies, including the Alvin Ailey Training Ensemble and Elisa Monte Dance Company. In 1994, he retired from the stage to take a position as ballet master and head of the artistic department with Nacho Duato?s Compa?ia Nacional de Danza in Spain. Irving looks to take the Oregon Ballet Theatre to new heights, riffing off rave reviews from the Oregonian's Bob Hicks, who wrote that the theatre's Swan Lake is ?a work of sumptuous geometric balances that echo the story's mirror-image theme.?
