A practitioner of martial arts since 2001, Michele Moore realized at some point that most women and teen girls lack know-how when it comes to self-defense. To remedy this, she started EMPOWERED Fitness & Self-Defense as a side project out of a local dojo. There, she began teaching female students not only how to react during a confrontation, but how to avoid confrontations in the first place. Today, she operates out of a variety of locations around the Portland metro area, from gyms to parks. During private lessons, four-week programs, and monthly seminars, ladies learn how recognize and deal with potential threats, as well as how to discern between media-fueled hype and realistic situations in which crimes can occur. They'll also become competent in physical self-defense techniques so they can feel confident and at ease without having to carry a samurai sword everywhere.

When practicing kickboxing, it may be beneficial to visualize a shadow opponent, but a shadow opponent isn’t going to build muscle resistance. During each Fierce Fitness Kickboxing workout, students burn calories and build lean muscle by thrashing a Wavemaster standup heavy bag to the bass pulse of club music. Instructors shout encouragement while teaching self-defense techniques that utilize kicks, punches, elbows, and knees. Fitness and nutrition programs add dietary guidance to Fierce Fitness workouts, helping with weight loss and relationships with neighbors in gingerbread houses.
