When he's not whipping the youth soccer players of the Portland Timbers into shape, Waterfront Fitness's owner Jason Bell heads to the city?s riverside parks to shape up everyday citizens with rigorous athletic drills. He and his team of qualified instructors convene beneath Portland's sky during all but the coldest months, incinerating calories during one-hour boot camps held every morning and evening. These sessions include activities such as strength circuits, Interval training, games, and box fit, which features high-speed punching drills and cardiovascular throwdowns beneath the boughs of mighty park trees. The trainers also provide general and sport-specific personal training for exercisers in search of an intense, highly personalized regimen to build muscle or burn fat.
During the challenge, teams of two or more individuals will run helter-skelter around the city in a frantic race for cash prizes and personal pride, with a first-place award of $200. Not only will participants have to solve strands of interconnected clues that would test the deductive powers of even the most seasoned consulting detective, they'll need to plot spatiotemporal stratagems while exploring undiscovered corners of the city. Although being physically fit is a plus, quick wits and wise planning will ultimately determine the winners. Participation in the challenge gets contestants a clue packet, race-number bib, and T-shirt, and fees also help toward contributions to partner charities and the prize pool. What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own?
The biggest mistake I see people make is searching for short-cuts, gimmicks or easy results. Of course fitness can be simple, but simple isn't necessarily easy. I see too many people go from one method to the next without allowing proper time for success. Find what works for you, and make small adjustments from there. Consistency is the key.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
We constantly vary our workouts so you'll never get bored and you'll be less likely to plateau or over-train. So every session looks a little different. However, some consistent features of our sessions include a general warm-up followed by guided mobility and stretching. Then we move on to a coached skills learning session and a workout of the day (WOD) with strength training and metabolic conditioning. Sessions conclude with a cool-down and mobility, along with goal-tracking and social time.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
As we enter our 10th year of training, we were originally one of only a few Portland area CrossFit gyms, back before most people had ever heard of CrossFit. We are also expanding our accessibility to become Portland's first and only 24-hour CrossFit gym. Our veteran coaches boast decades of combined training experience, to provide each individual the guidance they need to be safe, confident and successful, regardless of injuries or current fitness level. As of this spring, our new location is housed within a 60,000-square-foot warehouse, yet we maintain hands-on and community driven classes by capping most of them at only 12 students. We also offer more than just CrossFit. We have workshops devoted to boxing, strongman techniques, yoga, and endurance. Students may take advantage of open-gym time outside of class, as well as personal training sessions.
The rivalry between Ducks fans and Beavers fans is built right into the Ducks vs. Beavers Rivalry Clash's race course. Supporters of the two teams, decked out in their most spirited gear, kick off the chip-timed race at separate starting lines, and begin the race by running straight towards each like old armies. Instead of a head-on collision, the two groups funnel into a single mass, sharing a race course as they vie for the fastest times on the 5K or 10K route. The speediest school wins a donation to their university's laptop scholarship program, plus the right to refer to their rival school as "our satellite campus."
Regardless of the results, everyone buries the hatchet at a tailgate-style afterparty, where entertainment ranges from a tug-of-war to the most beloved of collegiate pastimes: a flip-cup tournament. The flip-cup games, as well as corn-hole and other competitive events, give racers a chance to earn more glory for their schools. There are also awards for the fastest individuals, the team of five with the lowest combined time, and the school with the lowest overall score (as determined by the sum of the top 100 runners' places).
The Fire Dash doesn't simply test participants as runners?it tests them as if they were probationary firefighters ("probies") completing tasks actual recruits would have to accomplish. The 5K obstacle course begins with a flat-out sprint and then finds probies crawling through tunnels obstructed by smoke, fire, and lost kittens. Although each obstacle can be completed individually, some are more easily tackled by teaming up with fellow runners?as the firefighters who designed the race say, "leaving others behind to get to the finish line isn't a good trait for firefighters."
To honor the race's inspiration, a portion of the proceeds are donated to organizations such as the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and local benevolent funds.
