Terra Sports’ two-wheeling gurus construct a cycling community around an experienced knowledge base and expert bike services. With a staff commitment to safety demonstrated by hours of volunteer work, Terra-tuned steeds and their passengers can ride assured that technicians have tended to every detail. Each tune-up begins with a thorough lubrication and adjustment of the bicycle's drive chain. Next, bike surgeons tweak the cable system, adjusting it until they can strum a few recognizable chords from A Horse With No Name. A light wheel true promotes kinetic solidarity and ensures that you know where your bike really goes at night. Tune-ups conclude with a basic wash. Call ahead to schedule an appointment.

More than 55 lakes—among them Lake Coeur d'Alene, Lake Pend Oreille, and Priest Lake—speckle the region around Coeur d'Alene, giving ospreys plenty of fish to dive after and outdoor adventurers many waterways to explore. The team at New Sun Adventures encourages these explorations by renting out a veritable armada of jet skis, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Locals and tourists alike glide across the glassy waters of Hayden Lake in easy-to-maneuver Emotion Spitfire 8 kayaks or dart around Liberty Lake atop Surftech paddleboards. The company’s fleet of jet-powered Yamaha WaveRunners comes in handy when one needs to fly across the lake or settle a grudge by jousting with foam noodles. For those who prefer adventuring on dry land, New Sun Adventures plans to soon offer ATV rentals for rugged treks through the region’s national forests.

Paddles dip into the water of Coeur d'Alene lake, boards glide across its surface, and a moose nibbles plants near its edge as groups of paddleboarders see North Idaho through new eyes. Moments like these spring from the dedication and passion of Coeur d'Alene Paddle Board Company's staff. With a mission to share their love for stand-up paddleboarding, they teach classes on fundamental techniques and lead group sessions into the area's scenic waters. Under guides' watchful eyes, groups float out into the open lake or along more narrow waterways flanked by trees and rubber duckies squeaking in their natural habitats.

Named one of the top five bike shops in Spokane by Best of Spokane in 2010, The Bike Hub’s talented techs tweak spokes and clean chains to restore pedaling power and road-mauling mojo. The performance tune-up revives sagging pedal ponies by adjusting the derailleurs to ensure timely shifting during steep climbs, and a brake adjustment helps prevent riders from speeding out of control past roadrunners and riding straight off a cartoon cliff. Eager to collect memorabilia on every ride, the chain is cleaned of dirt, gunk, and souvenir spoons before a healthy dose of lube protects it from further abrasion. Similarly, the cables are lubed for smooth shifting and a longer life. Cable housings are checked for cracks, and eagle-eyed techs also inspect the rear derailleur to ensure proper alignment. All major bearing systems and hubs are adjusted, and both wheels are treated to a precision truing to restore roundness and rid asymmetric reminders of catastrophic collisions. A hardware check ensures that components aren’t compromised and can handle the required torque. Any necessary repair parts are installed for no additional charge. Before bike and rider are reunited, the tires are checked and properly inflated so each two-wheeler can roll out the door and off into the sunset.

More than two decades ago, Paul Fish dreamed up a unique backpack and stitched a prototype by hand. After some redesigns, Fish and his wife opened an outdoor apparel shop—Mountain Gear—where they could sell these packs to local climbers and backpackers. Today, Mountain Gear's spacious retail location boasts a comprehensive selection of gear for camping, hiking, and climbing, as well as snowsports and watersports. Skiers can bundle up in gear from The North Face and Black Diamond, and mountaineers can ascend to new altitudes with Mountain Hardwear apparel. Mountain Gear also houses an indoor climbing wall, and its outdoorsy staff hosts classes that teach attendees how to tackle their first climbing wall or cook meals in the wilderness without having to call a restaurant for instructions.
