The big sky above The Ranch at Bandy Canyon has watched over nearly 150 years of homesteading history, stretching back to John D. Bandy, who staked his claim in 1870. Having undergone a multimillion-dollar restoration, the main lodge boasts two kitchens equipped with antique stoves, three patios warmed by open-air fireplaces, and rustic ceiling beams repurposed from the original San Diego pier. Its terraced landscape often hosts wedding ceremonies as well. Further along, the Ranch sprawls across 144 trail-laced acres, providing a well-maintained stomping ground for human, horse, and tumbleweed alike. Country cottages dot the land as well, granting visitors a spot to lay their hats, and a pool helps wash off the lather of a day on the trails.
Snap Time Photobooths captures the sweet smiles and funny faces people make when no one’s looking. The portable black booths can be set up at birthday parties, weddings, and corporate events with unlimited use for participants. As people squeeze into the cozy space, they can slip on top hats and boas or raise prop glasses in toasts. The booth snaps four photos of each visit and prints them out for event souvenirs. Rentals also include other memory-making options, such as scrapbooks of every photo from the event, digital copies, and custom logos on each strip.
Like his father, the former governor of the Argentinian state of Mendoza, Alejandro Orfila chose a life of diplomacy. From 1946 until the early 80s, his various public service roles included Argentine Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States and Argentine Ambassador to Japan. But like his grandfather, a winemaker whose 1905-established winery stands to this day, Alejandro harbored a lifelong love of viticulture. In 1994, Alejandro finally pursued that passion by founding Orfila Vineyards & Winery, a 70-acre hillside estate nestled within a 10,000-acre agricultural preserve in the San Pasqual Valley.
These days, winemaker Justin Mund oversees production on the estate, where grapes grow only 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Using both the estate's grapes and others from the California coast, Justin crafts wines that have earned more than 1,300 medals in national and international competitions since the winery's founding. Guests can sample said wines in a tasting room overlooking the estate, as well as a second located at the Wynola Farms Marketplace in Julian. Besides tastings, Orfila hosts events ranging from live concerts to the annual Grape Stomp festival, where folks gather to watch traditional wine-making and grapes gather to hold their annual Shirley Jackson-esque lottery.
At FunBelievable Play, British owners Lynne and Adriana introduce the San Diego area to “British-style” indoor play with playground equipment imported from the United Kingdom. Meeting all playground safety regulations, the 6,000-square-foot facility helps children use their imaginations while developing their physical and mental capabilities, and climbing structures and interactive games encourage social skills that come in handy when imaginary friends go off to college. A colorful three-level play structure hosts fun amenities such as tube slides, climbing walls, tiki-figure punching bags, and a ball shower, whereas the sports arena gives future athletes the chance to kick goals and shoot baskets. Wobbly walkers and toddlers enjoy more age-appropriate play in their own space, which scales down big-kid fun into an area littered with soft toys, a mini ball pit, and mini slides.
Parents can sip coffee in a lounge area and rest easy knowing their children are playing on equipment that's sanitized and inspected daily. The staffers are fully trained and have passed background checks, and many of them also are certified in first aid and CPR and boast an encyclopedic knowledge of cartoons.
Presented in part by Dan Clark, also known as Nitro, of American Gladiator fame, the Gladiator Rock'n Run is a unique and challenging event, pairing an obstacle-heavy running course and an attempt at breaking the record for the world?s longest mud pit with post-race entertainment, including beer, music, and food. Those prepared to race must dance through tires, army-crawl through mud, and clamber up rope ladders to avoid barrels thrown by giant apes. The roar of spectators rings throughout the course as bystanders cheer on runners to inspire strong finishes.
