Established in 2001, the Kansas International Film Festival takes as its creed a quote from alt-director Stan Brakhage: “It’s OK to think while watching movies.” With this simple philosophy in mind, the organizers arrange each year’s hugely diverse lineup, which encompasses everything from comedies and dramas to high-minded documentaries and passion projects from famous artists. The festival also confers jury- and audience-selected awards, rewarding films in categories including Best Social Justice Documentary, Best Feature Narrative Film, and Best Use of Fruit as a Metaphor.
As UMKC’s resident theater company, Kansas City Repertory Theatre performs professional-grade productions under its nationally lauded artistic director, Eric Rosen. This season’s theatrical selection features the musical classic Cabaret, alongside the thought-provoking, one-man show Another American: Asking and Telling, the Obie-award-winning comedy Circle Mirror Transformation, and the famously “impossible to produce” adventure Peer Gynt. Check the regular season showtimes and seating charts to plan your visit; call to reserve your tickets all at once, or schedule your trips separately, in accordance with your celestial horoscope.
For the past 23 years, the Kansas City funny house has been splitting sides like a hatchet splits cookies. Choose from Improv Sports, performed weekly at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, or opt for the mature-audience-only show, Chaos Theatre, at 10 p.m. on Saturday. With 38 years of teaching experience and a certified national examiner for Dance Masters of America in tap, ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and modern, owner and instructor Kathi Nallia expertly guides students through the mysteries of movement. Aspiring hoofers of any age may enroll in a number of classes, whether it’s for improving energy and flexibility or saving the local summer camp from foreclosure in a marathon dance-off. Students are welcome to explore the expressive grace of ballet, jazz, or tap in the Adult Dance class, land a leading role with instruction in the Musical Theatre Training course, or show a toddler the basics of rhythm in Artistic Tots. Nallia's considerate dance instructors will patiently work with students of all kinds, whether they're competitive tap dancers or haven't danced since Bob Dole's "The Funkadelic-In-Chief" presidential campaign. Walk-ins are not accepted, as the instructor registers students on a first-come, first-served basis. Different classes are available six days a week. Call ahead for schedules.
