Since opening its doors in the Montgomery Mall way back in July of 1970, Candle Cabin has soothed Alabama with the alluring aromas of its name-brand stock. Now part of the Peppertree Shopping Center, the store carries votive and decorative candles alike from makers like SnootyToot, Votivo, and original art by Ruthie Carlson. Candles aside, everything from cookbooks and jewelry to Auburn and Alabama collegiate gear line the shelves. The Candles Cabin team even gift-wraps any item for free, which saves customers the hassle of foraging for seaweed to wrap their gift in.
Having compiled 33 years of art-teaching experience, Barb Grimes guides students in her art classes as they learn a multitude of techniques and work with an orchestra of color. With only 12 students per class, paintbrushes receive extra instruction with every stroke and Jackson Pollock–esque splash. All artwork created by aspiring artists will be able to be taken home and posted to refrigerator doors, used for show-and-tell, or uploaded to personal blogs for international feedback and acclaim. Classes are currently scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Call to reserve your class.

Voted to have the best milkshakes by Birmingham News’ readers, Eclipse Coffee & Books boasts an eclectic selection of hot and cold beverages, as well as a menu that brims with sandwiches and delectable breakfast options. Literary theorists can interpret the poetry of pastries with the pecan pie milkshake ($6), or nurse a cup of chocolate turtle latte ($4.50) as they thumb through a novel from one of Eclipse's three book rooms. A bite from the avocado melt ($5.50) with red onion and provolone will satiate hungry bookworms, while Eclipse's selection of beers and liquor is as ever-changing as Abe Lincoln's facial expressions on Mount Rushmore. In addition to its laid-back vibe and stacks of intriguing literature, Eclipse hosts several events each month, including palate-pleasing wine tastings, trivia nights, poetry slams, and soothing musical performances.
