True to their company's name—which translates to "Mambo for You" in Spanish—the enthusiastic instructors welcome students of all experience levels and abilities.
Under a striking canopy of wooden beams, dancers shuffle and slide across the blond hardwood dance floor of Studio One RI's 2,300-square-foot studio. Elegant ballroom routines, sultry salsa exchanges, and down-home country-western steps fill a schedule of morning, evening, and weekend classes. In group and private classes, experienced instructors balance the fun and charm of dance with the precision and complex systems of strings required by its more rigorous forms. Parents and toddlers can tango together in special classes, and youth ages 4 to 16 can soak up the fun, social environment of youth classes.
Arthur Murray has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and The Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, The Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.
JM Kennedy is devoted to numerous forms of sensual and energetic dancing, offering both basic and advanced pole dancing classes for fledgling and veteran students. In a basic pole class ($25 value), aspiring masters of the vertical bar will learn ten basic pole steps that contribute to a powerful core and toned extremities, which will also put you in terrific shape for future shadow-puppet theatre performances. You'll feel your muscles tighten and flex every time you walk by a pole on the street and it looks back at you with those cold, doubtful eyes. Climb the heights to physical empowerment and discover that a pole can be decorated by much more than barber stripes and yard-sale signs.
