When it first opened more than a century ago, Palmieri?s Bakery was just a small storefront on Almy Street. The shop specialized in bread and pizza using old family recipes from Italy, and won the loyalty of the community. Over time, the bakery grew to become a Providence favorite, serving up everything from cannoli and zeppoles to almond biscotti and egg biscuits. Today, you can step inside this slice of traditional Italy and pick up a loaf of savory Italian bread, a slice of Sicilian pizza, or a hat-full of cream-filled pastries. Folks can even spruce up parties with one of the bakery?s specialty cakes, layered with lemon coconut, triple chocolate, and samoa cake.

When Gianfranco Marrocco left Italy for America, he had big dreams. But his high hopes for what he?d do with his new life were coupled with nostalgia for the outdoor caf?s in his native country. Confident that the people of Providence would also enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere he longed for from back home, he decided to open an authentic Italian caff?. His dream was realized with the opening of Caffe Dolce Vita, situated in the heart of the picturesque DePasquale Plaza on Federal Hill. Inside Caffe Dolce Vita, warm tones of copper and bronze showcase contemporary Italian style, along with sage-green leather banquettes (fondly referred to by many Americans by their pet name, ?booths? or "great hide-and-go-seek spots"). The kitchen team brings out brunch, lunch, and dinner feasts of savory Italian dishes, such as veal parmigiana. Double espressos and cappuccinos perk up guests, along with specialty drinks at the bar, where servers pour popular Italian liqueurs such as Sambuca and Limoncello.

The Bradford first opened its doors 30 years ago as a neighborhood convenience store, supplying the community with groceries, newspapers, and quick lunches of classic Italian-American cuisine. But now the aisles have disappeared, and though there are still Italian dishes on the menu, they're joined by upscale pub food. Diners can select from dishes such as nachos, wings, and variety of grilled thin crust pizzas including bbq, pepperoni, and margherita. Meatball enthusiasts can experience this topping on a pizza or paired with seasoned fries. The Bradford's ambiance embraces a similar upscale vibe. Exposed brickwork and high-topped wooden tables sit among the earth-toned walls lined with framed artwork. In the recently redesigned interior, pendant lamps dangle from the high ceilings, ensuring that the warm space remains more well-lit than Santa's workshop at 3 a.m. on December 23. While guests relax here, they can listen to live music or sip specialty cocktails with muddled ingredients.

Outfit Dorothy and Toto with a pair of electric guitars and you'd almost have The Classic Cafe's mix of rock 'n' roll and Americana?but you'd still be hungry. Fortunately this '50s-loving diner has that covered. Amid the vinyl albums lining the counter, a couple Fenders, and walls covered with vintage-style posters advertising the movies, cars, and smartphones from decades past is an open kitchen that serves up hearty plates of classic American cuisine. Breakfasts, for instance, stuff diners with biscuits smothered in country gravy, pancakes straight from the griddle, and three-egg omelets full of meats and veggies. And when lunchtime rolls around, the chefs churn out salads and sandwiches, including 8-ounce burgers topped with chili, onion, and jalape?os.
