Featured on A&E’s America’s Castles, the three-story Rosemount Manor was designed by notable New York architect Henry Hudson Holly and completed in 1893, then served as the wealthy Thatcher family’s 24,000-square-foot residence for 75 years. Genial museum guides take guests of all ages on a one-hour tour through this 37-room chateau, passing along interesting architectural tidbits, such as the fact Rosemount is constructed entirely of pink rhyolite stones from a nearby quarry. Marvel at the museum’s preeminent decorative details, such as the custom paneling, coffered ceilings, maple and mahogany woodwork, antique furniture, stained-glass displays, Tiffany chandeliers, a primitive 19th-century video-game console, and a grand oak staircase.

Located next door to the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility—an operational prison built in 1871—Museum of Colorado Prisons houses no inmates within its walls. Instead, the former Women's Correctional Facility now contains 30-plus cells, each transformed into exhibits covering more than 140 years of the state's incarceration history. Along with in-depth profiles of notorious prisoners of the likes of Alfred Packer, who was infamously convicted of cannibalism, the museum homes in on aspects of prison life throughout the decades. Displays encompass everything from confiscated contraband to inmate arts and crafts, including many watercolors of contraband that prisoners were feeling wistful about. Besides daily audio of self-guided tours, the museum invites visitors to occasional events every year, such as nighttime ghost-hunting expeditions.

More than 4,000 artifacts. A 27-acre campus and 5,000-volume research library. These numbers just begin to describe the massive collection gathered at Western Museum of Mining and Industry. The institution's staff delve into history as miner's burrow into the ground, finding and preserving the stories and items that fueled the industrial revolution. The standing collection focuses largely on artifacts; visitors can see a ten-stamp ore mill up close, a large machine designed to crush rock so that people could extract the precious ore that lay within and see if any of the stones were filled with jelly.

The venue also regularly hosts special presentations in its multipurpose center, featuring events in the past such as The Gold King's Legacy, an exploration of Winfield Scott Stratton's Cripple Creek mining operation. Led by Mark Turk, executive director of the Myron Stratton Home, the discussion explores Stratton's story, and the forces that ultimately led him to found the Myron Stratton Home as a means to provide for "poor persons who are without means of support and who are physically unable by reason of old age, youth sickness or other infirmity to earn a livelihood."
