Yoga can instill its practitioners with inner strength and peace, and Real Life Yoga helps students capture these qualities through more than just sun salutations. The studio conducts its
classes in an environment designed to be non-competitive, welcoming, and lighthearted. Owner Dee Lyon and her team of accomplished teachers welcome brand-new students as well as yoga aficionados, providing mats to those without. The certified instructors encourage safe, healthy sessions, suggesting modifications that can ease stress and prevent discomfort, injury, or getting stuck that way. They offer non-yoga classes, too, including tai chi, self-defense, and a high-energy combination of boxing, dance, and Pilates.
At A Healthy Balance, personal trainers and registered dietitians join forces to promote fitness and health by tailoring practical wellness plans to clients' individual goals and lifestyles. The facility's sprawling services are designed to boost overall well-being through such modalities as sports massage and wellness consultations more personalized than a snowflake's DNA. A roster of fitness services, such as boot-camp classes, helps singe superfluous calories, and nutritional guidance encourages wholesome habits with one-on-one consultations and custom meal planning.
To further bolster wellness regimens, patrons enroll in a comprehensive 12-week nutritional program, during which staffers outline individual weight-managing, health-improving, and calendar-flipping techniques. A Healthy Balance's diverse team also bestow their wisdom during frequent classes and events held throughout the community.
Aftercare Injury and Wellness Center boosts overall heath with a variety of services. Fitness classes rely on yoga, Pilates, and P90X workouts to tone bodies, build stamina, and blast calories. Corrective exercises also rely on customization to ensure that clients treat their injuries effectively.
In 2010, Kru Yai Mark Nardone received a blessing to open SitSuphan Muay Thai Boran Academy—the first of its kind in the world. The blessing came from Arjarn Suphan Chabairam, who lent his name to the facility after a legendary career that included more than 300 fights and championship belts at the Featherweight and Bantamweight levels.
Today, Kru Mark and his team of mized martial artists continue to carry on Suphan’s legacy at Suphan LLC, a 3,000-square training facility in Braintree. Much of their curriculum is built around Muay Thai, the ancient fighting art that originated in Thailand some 2,000 years ago. Instead of having students swing at cardboard cutouts of childhood bullies, Kru Mark and his instructors incorporate elements of shadowboxing, padwork, and heavy bag training into their classes. They also utilize their facility’s numerous training amenities, including a full-size boxing ring.
As an LPG-certified Endermologie technician who has it out for patches of cellulite and fat, Jennifer McGilvray decided to found Perpetual Motion Body Improvement Center. She drew on her background in fitness and nutrition to inform which high-tech services would help achieve her mission. She now treats cellulite with Cynosure’s Triactive laser, fosters weight loss with Formostar’s infrared body wraps, and helps burst fat cells and swallowed balloon animals with the Lapex 2000 LipoLaser.
Though Christopher Bopp has won first place three times in a row at the New England Regional Yoga Asana Championships, he does not consider yoga a sport. For him, the art is a daily practice, one that assists with the regular upkeep of his body and mind. He and the certified instructors at Bikram Yoga Quincy hope to pass the basics of the technique on to others, who will in turn interpret them to suit their personal credos.
Because everyone's perception of yoga varies, Christopher encourages guests to attend classes from different instructors. The 90-minute class structure—26 asanas in a toasty studio—remains the same, but each teacher's character illuminates the lesson from a fresh angle. As the instructors’ personalities coalesce under a single yoga style, the end result is a diverse but dedicated community. Familial vibes fill the lobby after every class, when students and instructors can share crisp bites of fruit and figure out who was and was not a heat mirage.
