The indoor summits at Crimper?s Climbing Gym stretch up to 16 feet in the bouldering arena, 23 feet in the top-rope range, and 30 feet in the lead climbing section. In each specialized area, colorful holds of different shapes and sizes riddle wall faces. Climbers navigate these holds by practicing the fundamentals across the varied angles, heights, and distances that span between them. Beginners will find wall routes tailored to their skill set, just as technically advanced climbers will find more complicated boulder scenarios. Crimper?s Climbing also offers classes, hosts birthday parties and team-building exercises, and extends membership opportunities to enthusiasts and agoraphobic billy goats.

You could take your child to a petting zoo, or you could bring the petting zoo to them, thanks to Kiddie Kritterz. With 35 animals in house, they liven up birthday parties, family reunions, and other events with their mobile menagerie and, of course, pony rides.

New River Climbing School’s PCGI-trained and certified staff, led by senior cragsman David Wolff, shepherds climbers of all skill levels skyward during a variety of education-packed tours. Small groups equipped with the necessary climbing and rappelling gear—such as shoes, helmets, and microphones for amplifying yodels—follow the step-by-step instructions of experienced guides, who undergo rigid evaluations before earning a spot on the school’s team. Throughout each adventure, the New River Gorge coddles sensory receptors with an array of sites, sounds, and smells, including kaleidoscopic rock swirls and towering mountains chiseled into words of encouragement. Half-day and full-weekend tours enable the staff to further cater to guests from varying backgrounds, occupations, and experience levels.

Dan Hague is something of an expert on the sport of rock climbing. He even co-authored a book on the subject, The Self-Coached Climber, that lays out how amateur climbers can improve their skills on their own. Of course, if beginners and intermediate climbers want some help learning the ropes, he's more than happy to offer his expert guidance to them as well at his own facility, Rise Up Climbing. The 6,000-square-foot space houses roped climbing and bouldering walls that tower as high as 40 feet in certain spots. Lest beginners shake in their harnesses at the sight of the towering wall, the half-hour Basic Skills course teaches small groups the fundamentals of climbing, such as how to properly don a harness, belay for a partner, and talk trash to a conquered route.

Like a ?tall? at the coffee shop or a snake named Fluffy, the Skate Center of Roanoke Valley?s moniker belies its true form. While it's true that visitors may careen along the hardwood floor of the roller-skating rink, a number of other fun, calorie-burning activities also await to amp up heartbeats. Healthy competition abounds in the Challenge Arena, where patrons can battle each other with cushioned bolsters or race up a climbing wall to win the shotgun seat on the way home. In the Play Zone, kids 12 and under dive into a Ball Pond and ricochet down slides before burning off remaining energy in the bounce room.
