Against the serene backdrop of the Appalachian Mountain foothills, the ancient Eastern traditions of aikido and yoga are alive and well. Blue Ridge Aikido & Yoga’s cofounder Irene Malochowky is a registered nurse and certified yoga instructor equipped with exactly the skill set she needs to help students safely discover their bodies’ potential during gentle or challenging yoga sessions. As a certified advanced teacher in cardiac yoga, yoga for osteoporosis, and yoga for multiple sclerosis (MS), she is uniquely positioned to help students who struggle with injuries or chronic health issues. The studio’s cofounder Ron Malachowsky has achieved the rank of sandan in aikido—the equivalent of a third-degree black belt. He infuses his martial-arts practice with mindfulness and body-awareness principles from yoga, which he has practiced for over 20 years. The result is a marital-arts class that not only teaches self-defense techniques but also the mental focus and discipline required to get through to you inner child when he’s busy texting.

Aquatic Adventures’ staff of lifelong instructors and competitive swimmers transforms young fins into formidable flippers over the course of a month. Group lessons are divided into six class levels. Green guppies can wet their feet in the Seal program, which acquaints them with basic swimming skills in the shallower depths, and Walrus-level classes build on the basics to foster independence in swimmers who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, floating, and socializing with trout. Freestyle, backstrokes, and breath control constitute the Ice Fish curriculum, before the Macaroni Penguin program prepares youngsters for endurance swimming with longer distance practice and deep-water-diving skills. Children already privy to the secrets of the deep can enroll in advanced Polar Bear clinics that aim to further refine their skills through a focus on competitive swimming strokes and salmon hunting.
If you're at all interested in the martial arts or self-defense, there's something for you at Lindamood's Martial Arts Center. The expansive studio hosts classes in a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to Korean tae kwon do, kickboxing, and Brazilian jujitsu. There are even special classes for children that focus on building motor skills and self-confidence in a fun, social setting.
Sunlight pours onto the exposed-brick walls of the Jowers Training Systems private training facility, where exercise rings dangle from the ceiling and colorful weights line the shelves. Throughout the week, the facility is a flurry of motion as students of all ages and fitness levels undergo high-intensity exercise routines as well as personal- and team-training sessions. Personal-training sessions adhere to the specialty program designed by certified personal trainer and fitness aficionado Jeff Jowers, who combines fat-burning exercises with nutritional guidance to banish unwanted pounds more efficiently than traditional workouts or covering yourself in helium balloons. In team-training sessions, Jowers and his staff bring the same level of intensity, adding an element of teamwork that encourages all students to celebrate each other's successes, work harder to achieve goals, and hit new personal records.
A fourth-degree black belt in tae kwon do and hapkido, Master Dennis Wood teaches sophisticated combat and self-defense techniques at Triple Tigers Martial Arts. Flattened hands and foil blades slice through the air as Master Wood calls upon his experiences as a pupil in Korea and a dragon rancher in Texas to guide students of all ages and abilities along their chosen paths. The studio’s martial-arts disciplines include tai chi, fencing, and a style of tae kwon do that adheres to the World Taekwondo Federation’s 2,000-year-old methodology of practical self-defense. The weekly class schedule includes up-to-date group class times; students may call ahead to reserve times for private lessons.
