Though LaDawn has loved baking with her mother and grandmother since childhood, Sweets By LaDawn began as an accident. After LaDawn told her coworker that her (nonexistant) recipe for Italian cream cake was better than a local restaurant's, she then quickly cobbled together a cake to bring in. Surprisingly, all of LaDawn's coworkers agreed her cake was in fact better than the restaurant's, and the orders for cakes started coming in. After relocating to Cincinnati from Baton Rouge following Hurricane Katrina, she now creates custom cakes that she sculpts into 3-D shapes, tops with printed images, or frosts to a decorative finish. She starts with a choice of cake batter in flavors such as lemon, red velvet, or spice cake. From there, she can pipe cakes with a swirl of cherry, Oreo, or chocolate bavarian cream fillings. She then frosts the entire thing in a pristine layer of cream cheese, buttercream, chocolate ganache, or molded fondant. Outside of cakes, she also crafts cookies and cupcakes. Plenty of parking is available near Sweets by LaDawn, and customers may sit in the shop's outdoor seating area to enjoy treats from inside.
As a kid, Corwyn Thomas helped choose the ties his father wore to work at a prestigious local bank in Shreveport, Louisiana. That preternatural knack for accessorizing eventually blossomed into a full-fledged fashion-design career, and in 2001, Corwyn unveiled his first collection of chic, Italian-inspired neckties forged from elegant materials and hand-sewn detailing. Since the ties' debut, they have lined the shelves of more than 300 stores across the globe and adorned the necks of celebrities at glamorous events, such as the Academy Awards and the Grammys. Today, Corwyn and his team of haberdashers cultivate complete, gentlemanly ensembles, complementing their arsenal of neckwear with custom-made suits and dress shirts. Each tie’s sheath of top-quality, hand-finished silk spiffs up collars with floral prints, stripes, and geometric designs, and it includes a fully fitted interlining that helps yield pristine knots and makeshift lassos.
If ever there was a dash of awkwardness in visiting an adult entertainment store, Hustler Hollywood has all but erased it. Theresa Flynt—daughter to Larry Flynt, creator of the Hustler empire—came up with the concept in the late 1990s. She envisioned a place that not only sold adult-themed products, but celebrated them. So in 1998, she established the first location on historic Sunset Blvd. Since then, Hustler Hollywood has expanded across the country, opening both urban and interstate locations that are just as bright, airy, and relaxed as the first. The chain has certainly turned heads throughout the adult entertainment industry, as well as in pop culture. Hustler Hollywood has twice won the Retail Store Chain of the Year from XBIZ, and has even appeared in such popular television series as Entourage and Sex and the City.
