When Brian Paris received chiropractic care for a football injury at the age of 10, he wasn’t just improving his health, but determining his career path as well. He might have found his way into health care regardless—one of his brothers is a medical doctor and the other a chiropractor, and Dr. Paris has a passion for maintaining peak athletic performance. The former all-state lacrosse player went on to earn his doctor of chiropractic degree and become certified in both neuromuscular therapy and chiropractic biophysics, a science-based chiropractic method that includes joint and postural adjustments, traction, and spinal exercise.
Today, Dr. Paris practices at Advanced Spine & Wellness Center to help others heal from injuries and lead more active lives. Together with fellow chiropractor Mike Kraft and owner and alternative-medicine specialist Andrew Bloch, Dr. Paris takes a multifaceted approach to wellness. Dr. Paris uses his expertise as a distinguished fellow of CBP to align the spine, and Bloch calls upon his training as a physical therapist and acupuncturist to relieve pain. The combination appears to be effective: high-performance athletes, including former professional football players, dancers, and professional arm wrestlers, have praised the center's team.
Shapers Salon & Spa owners Bina and Neelam love helping others feel beautiful. Along with standard salon services, they offer ethnic-hair treatments that include cornrows, relaxers, and permanent weaves. They also remove unwanted hair with waxing or threading services that pull strands from the root, keeping skin hair-free for longer than traditional shaving. At 355 Barbershop & Spa, an experienced massage therapist uses careful movements to elevate weary bodies to a state of relaxed bliss. The 30-minute Swedish massage blends five different types of long, gentle strokes and gentle pressure to melt tension and pent-up stress faster than a thermos of hot cocoa melts the heart of a snowman. As the specialist targets taps and kneads, the soothing suite also helps contribute to increased circulation and a boosted immune system, leaving clients feeling both invigorated and at ease.
Much in the way that veins circulate blood throughout the body, meridians facilitate the flow of the bodies' electrical energy—or chi—from organ to organ. Armed with this understanding, the specialists at Meridian & Facial Spa aim to keep meridians flowing smoothly with a variety of Chinese practices performed inside vibrantly colored treatment rooms. The team members frequently perform the spa’s signature Meridian massage, which aids in the body’s natural detoxification process by targeting chi highways and breaking up traffic jams like a siren-blaring ambulance strapped to the top of a monster truck. And as the spa's name suggests, the staff performs more than just meridian-inspired services, including facials and peels administered by G.M. Collin–trained cosmetologists.
Owner Magdalen Lagergren was born in Nairobi, where her Kenyan name is Karugi Karanja, which means "little cook.” This name turned out to be prophetic: as a child, Magdalen made her own facial creams and masks from local fruits and vegetables. As an adult in the United States, she fostered her passion for skincare with formal training at Yvonne de Vilar Scientific Skin Care in Vienna, Virginia, and after graduating in 2004, she earned her aesthetics license and immediately went to work at local spas.
Today, at her own practice, Magdalen takes point guiding a staff of two licensed aestheticians to soothe skin with specialized facials and perform microdermabrasion, waxing, and body services with Dermalogica and Vivant skincare products. Four licensed massage therapists draw on a variety of techniques to ease specific aches and pains or combine them all in an attempt to create Voltron.
Within a vibrant zen-inspired space with nature-themed art and art-themed plants, Sanam Day Spa's holistic healers draw upon multiple massage modalities to foster full relaxation of the body and mind. Therapists customize treatments with a blend of the soothing strokes of Swedish massage, the precise prods of reflexology upon the hands and feet, and the targeted taps of acupressure, which hearkens back to age-old Chinese medicinal techniques to promote wellness and nourish backs plagued by deep aches and Kick Me signs. Aestheticians can also refresh faces with a retinue of spa and clinical facials, which begin with a skin analysis to guide the facial using a custom mask, steam treatments, and extractions to fashion a spot-free, radiant complexion.
